1 The North America ALMA Science Center
Chris Carilli, John Hibbard, Crystal Brogan, and the NAASC ALMA Regional Centers (ARCs) Current Developments at the NAASC ALMA Proposal and Observing Tool Testing Each of the ALMA partners will provide an “ALMA Regional Center”, or ARC, to serve as the point of contact for its regional astronomical community. Each ARC will provide core support for ALMA observing, from proposal preparation to the delivery of pipeline-reduced data and images. mm/submm Spectral Line Catalogue For North America, the ARC core functions and other important user and community services will be provided by the North America ALMA Science Center (NAASC) based at NRAO Headquarters in Charlottesville, Virginia. ALMA Archive NAASC: North America ALMA Science Center, Charlottesville, VA ALMA Science Workshops ALMA Pipeline and Offline Data Reduction Software Testing The NAASC Has Three Major Components: The North American ARC Core Support Only trilaterally agreed upon services: Basic user support (help desk); Proposal preparation and submission; Observing script support; Quality assurance; Mirror of ALMA Archive. ALMA Technical and Software Support Maintenance & Repair of NA delivered hardware/software; Development of additional observing capabilities/techniques; Development of advanced observing & data reduction algorithms. Science Development Division Advanced user support (“hand-holding”); Reprocessing of large and/or complex datasets; Postdocs, student programs, workshops, summer schools; NA ALMA EPO. North American Hardware Deliverables Receiver band 3 ( GHz), band 6 ( GHz), the correlator, the photonic LO system, and the digital transmission system. North American Software Deliverables Real-time system, scheduling, pipeline, correlator and off-line data reduction systems. Development ALMA Operations includes provisions for technical upgrades and development of new capabilities in order to keep ALMA a state-of-the-art facility over its projected 50 year lifetime. These projects will be prioritized by the international ALMA Board, and conducted within the host communities. It is envisioned that much of this development work will involve the U.S. and Canadian astronomical and technical communities. In < 3 minutes!
