3 OUR HISTORY In July 1955, following a meeting with Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev, President Eisenhower said, “The subject that took most of my attention was the possibility of increased visits overseas by the citizens of one country into the territory of another.” Abbott Washburn, Deputy Director of the USIA, suggested the idea for “personal diplomacy” – developing a program for citizen exchange under the USIA aegis. “I have long believed, as have many before me, that peaceful relations between nations requires understanding and mutual respect between individuals.” - President Eisenhower

4 OUR HISTORY President Eisenhower was affected by the atrocities that he witnessed during World War II. He dreamed of creating an organization that would foster a lasting world peace by bringing people together face-to-face. The People to People program was launched at a special White House Conference on September 11, 1956 inviting business and civic leaders from throughout the country to head various committees.

5 OUR HISTORY Among the early leaders working with President Eisenhower were Walt Disney, Bob Hope and approximately 100 other remarkable individuals from industry, academia, sport, and the arts. The late Charles M. Schulz, creator of the Peanuts comic strip, generously contributed three pieces of artwork for PTPI Worldwide Conferences. The organization has reaped benefits from the talents of countless individuals who have supported the ideals set forth by President Eisenhower.

6 OUR HISTORY 1961, President Eisenhower later asked his close friend, Joyce C. Hall – the founder of Hallmark Cards, Inc. – to sponsor People to People in the private sector. Mr. Hall accepted and PTPI’s offices were established in Kansas City, MO. PTPI World Headquarters have been in Kansas City ever since.
