Thursday 13th November 2014 The lander Philae
2
Touchdown or landing (part 1)
(red = new words) Philae bounced off the surface of comet 67P and flew a kilometer out into space during a rough landing. The Philae probe is almost a mile away from where scientists had hoped it would land. The landing was difficult because Philae’s special harpoons didn't fire. Philae is in the shadow of a cliff, so its solar powered battery could not recharge itself. The battery on Philae lasted 60 hours.

Touchdown or landing (part 2)
Can you remember the new words? (Problems? Go back one slide!) Philae ….....……the surface of comet 67P and …….. a kilometer out into space during …………………………….. Historic (part 1) The robot probe is the size of a washing machine. It was launched from Rosetta on Wednesday 12th November and spent seven hours travelling to the comet. Rosetta left the Earth in 2004 and travelled through space for 10 years and covered 6 billion kms! The team of scientists at ESA have been working on this project for 25 years, since They want to find information about the origin of our Solar system. The comet was discovered in 1969.

Mission. Draw arrows from the adjectives to the surface of the comet.
The spacecraft took a few photos of the comet 67P (or Chury). The surface of the comet is craggy (escarpé) and grey. Chury is made of dust and rocks.

Grammar : comparisons 1/3
Philae is the size of a washing machine. = Philae is as big as a washing machine. The comet is smaller than London. = London is larger than the comet. (See next slide)

The comet : comparison with London.
It is : larger? Smaller? than London /3
13
The probe : Comparison with a washing machine! 3/3
The probe Philae is …… ……….. ….. a washing machine or Philae is ………… …………………… ……….. a washing machine.

Grammar. The past, the future.
Chronology : match the events with the dates. January 2004 1989 12 12 Nov 2014 1969 January 2014 Dec 2015 Rosetta was launched from Earth. The comet was discovered ESA activated Rosetta’s batteries. Philae landed on the comet. ESA began work to send a robot on the comet . Rosetta’s mission will end.

CHRONOLOGY : The pluperfect = le plus que parfait. Choose 1969 or 1989 ESA had begun its research in……………, before Rosetta was launched from Earth. 1989 Dec 2015 12 Nov 2014 January 2014 The comet was discovered 1969 Rosetta was launched from Earth Philae landed on the comet. The pluperfect = le plus que parfait.
ESA had begun its research in 1989, before Rosetta was launched from Earth. L’événement le plus ancien : « had begun » Temps : pluperfect. Construction : Auxil had + p. passé. Puis : « was launched » Temps : preterit Axe chronologique passé Russian scientists had discovered the comet and ESA had begun its work before Rosetta was launched.
