1 “The Emoji’s of Jesus”

2 1. What is anguish?

3 A. Anguish is a God given EMOTION
Anguish comes from Latin word, “angere” = "to choke, squeeze, strangle."

4 B. Anguish can be VALUABLE
Romans 8:18 - Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later.

5 i. Anguish clarifies what the heart truly worships
Do you worship deliverance or the Deliverer? ii. Anguish purifies the heart Do you only see the temporal heartache or the eternal victory? iii. Anguish motivates the heart to action Does your anguish cause you to act?

6 2. Was Jesus ever in anguish?

7 Luke 39 Then, accompanied by the disciples, Jesus left the upstairs room and went as usual to the Mount of Olives. 40 There he told them, “Pray that you will not give in to temptation.” 41 He walked away, about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” 43 Then an angel from heaven appeared and strengthened him. 44 He prayed more fervently, and he was in such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood.

8 39 Then, accompanied by the disciples…
SEEK SUPPORT 39 Then, accompanied by the disciples…

9 Proverbs 17:17 A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need.

10 B. SEEK PERSPECTIVE 39 Then, accompanied by the disciples, Jesus left the upstairs room and went as usual to the Mount of Olives. 40 There he told them, “Pray that you will not give in to temptation.”

11 1 Peter 4:12-13; 19 Dear friends, don’t be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you. 13 Instead, be very glad—for these trials make you partners with Christ in his suffering, so that you will have the wonderful joy of seeing his glory when it is revealed to all the world. 19 So if you are suffering in a manner that pleases God, keep on doing what is right, and trust your lives to the God who created you, for he will never fail you.

12 C. SEEK GOD 41 He walked away, about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”

13 James 4:6 - God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.
Philippians 4:6 - Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need…

14 3. What happens when we handle anguish appropriately?

15 43 Then an angel from heaven appeared…
A. SUPERNATURAL 43 Then an angel from heaven appeared… God’s help is only a prayer away!

16 Psalm 91:9-16 If you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, 10 no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home. 11 For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go. 12 They will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone. 13 You will trample upon lions and cobras; you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet! 14 The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. 15 When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them. 16 I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation.”

17 God gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless.
B. STRENGTH 43 Then an angel from heaven appeared and strengthened him. Isaiah 40:29 God gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless.

18 2 Chronicles 16:9 - The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. Psalm 23:4 - Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me…

19 sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood.
C. STAMINA 44 He prayed more fervently, and he was in such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood.

20 …God who gives endurance and encouragement…
Romans 15:5 …God who gives endurance and encouragement…

21 Hebrews 4:15 - This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin.
