2. @ Sycolin Creek How do we already use technology? We currently have
Grade level class sets of laptops
1:1 laptops in the computer lab
Class set of iPads that can be checked out
We have more technology this year than in previous years!
We were refreshed summer 2016.
Our ratio is 1 laptop for every 3.6 students.
This gives us enough laptops for 1:1 in the computer lab and each grade level has a class set of laptops.
In addition, our wonderful PTA purchased a class set of iPads that can be checked out and used in the classrooms.

Also known as BYOD (Device)
We are ready!

Students are digital citizens, it is not foreign to them, it is natural to utilize technology with their learning.

The rest of 3rd grade classes will begin the beginning of the 3rd quarter – January 30th (following Moveable Teacher work day).
As we begin, teachers will use BYOT as they are comfortable with, and what they feel is best for their class.

Common Sense Education Certification
All students in grades 3-5 participating in Common Sense Education’s Digital Citizenship program.
Covers a broad range of topics to keep students safe and effective users of technology.
3rd grade lessons: Cyberbullying (guidance), Keywords (library), Communication, Privacy, Pledge and BYOT expectations
4th grade lessons: Cyberbullying (guidance), Keywords (library), Privacy, Giving Credit, Pledge and BYOT expectations
5th grade lessons: Cyberbullying (guidance), Keywords (library), Privacy Rules, Citing a Site, Pledge and BYOT expectations
Students took a pre-test to evaluate Digital Citizenship before lessons, and post-test is used to evaluate learning that took place of each topic.
It is our concern and yours that students make safe choices when online. Building background knowledge in these areas is crucial.
These concepts will be reinforces whenever students using technology, whether it belongs to the school or students’ own devices with BYOT.

It is a parent’s choice whether or not their child brings a device to school. It is OPTIONAL!
Students will not be penalized for not bringing a device
Students will have the opportunity to use a school issued device
Why participate?
Students may be more familiar with their own device
More accessibility to technology (don’t have to wait until the technology piece is available).

15. @ Sycolin Creek What Makes a Good BYOT Device? BYOT Devices
-Although we can’t recommend specific devices,
we can certainly help make some good choices!
-Size may help productivity
-Connection to wifi using LCPS filter
-Protect device with case, screen protector, labeled, etc.
-Keyboard, mouse, headphones etc may help with productivity.
-More information on our school website -> BYOT channel
We are not able to make specific recommendations about what device to bring for BYOT.
Not necessary to have the most expensive model, as long as it has wifi connectivity student will be able to participate.
It must connect through LCPS Open wifi to utilize the filter to help keep students safe – absolutely no cell phone data should be used.
Above 10 inches will increase productivity.
School is not responsible for the device, should be labeled, in a case, screen protector, keyboard and mouse can increase productivity, personal headphones helpful.
Should come to school charged and students should have basic knowledge of how to use device.
Visit the BYOT Student Launch page to make sure sites are working on your personal device
The Acceptable Use Policy for LCPS includes BYOT. This was signed at the beginning of the year by each student/parent. The document is available on LCPS webpage as well as our school website under the BYOT channel.

times, places, and sites

BYOT devices at school will be used at designated times only.
Only during approved times (not recess or “free time” on devices
For instructional purposes only
Only visit approved sites
Some devices may need apps installed at home if necessary (examples for iPad).
Teachers and other students will not be touching devices
Designated places around the school where devices will not be allowed.

22. Additional Notes from the Meeting:
Parents were invited to be involved in BYOT by selecting different devices (laptop, iPad, or Dell tablet, or own personal device)
We looked at Kahoot with a 1:1 device
We looked at Kahoot with group collaboration (worked in teams)
We looked at Padlet to see how text, voice, photos, videos etc could be uploaded to a “wall”.
