Nationally recognized sub-organization of the National Honor Society. Designed with the intent to: Promote academic excellence Foster leadership skills Develop community awareness/responsibility Focus is specifically on Middle School child

3 Section I Selection of Members

4 Selection Process Grade Point Average of 3.65 (A- average)
Completion of Candidate Form Extra-Curricular Activities Leadership Experience Recognitions & Awards Community Service Activities Faculty Rating Scale Faculty Rating: Citizenship, Character and Leadership exhibited in classroom setting. 1-4 scale. Content, WL, Unified Arts & Music. Average brought forth to next step.

5 Selection Process Faculty Council Review Faculty Council Meeting
5 Anonymous Faculty Members Blind Review of Candidate Forms Faculty Council Meeting Each student discussed at length to determine eligibility. Adviser is a sixth, non-voting member of the council. Review of faculty rating scale incorporated. 1.5 weeks for Individual review to make notes and initial decision. Student names removed from forms for blind selection.

6 Selection Process Other important facts: If not selected in 2016-2017,
There is no limit to the number of students that can be inducted each year. Students will be inducted at a special ceremony to be held here at JFK on November 23rd at 6:30pm. If not selected in , Grade 7 may be eligible again in Grade 8. Does not have any impact on NHS possibility at SHS. Highlight change of induction date!

5 Pieces for completion. Discuss proper completion of each aspect individually.

8 Extra-Curricular Activities
List of JFK clubs and activities in which student participates Sports Intramural Sports Special Music Groups Note: art, band, chorus and orchestra are scheduled courses and do not count as extra-curricular

9 Leadership “A position of being in charge, guiding, or otherwise directing a group of individuals or an organization.” Outline of leadership experiences held within school as well as community organizations Elected Club Officer Sports Team Captain Function Organizer Definition from charter of NJHS. Nominations for leadership recognition, ABC Team Leader, theater stage manager, student ambassador, Patrol Leader for Boy Scouts.

10 Recognitions & Awards Honors or Awards given to student during their time at JFK. May be awarded from outside organizations. Attachment of actual document is not required. Awards given in Elementary school or prior to enrollment at Kennedy will not be considered.

11 Community Activities Community Service activities participated in for the betterment of a community. Work at food pantry/soup kitchen Aiding in Karate instruction for toddlers Working with special needs students Done in conjunction with church group, Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts Must have happened within enrollment at JFK. Should be ongoing, continuous service activities. Babysitting a sibling and mowing lawn for family is not considered community service.

12 Essay “In a brief paragraph, please state your goals and why you should be considered a member.” Goals for post-secondary school. Consideration for membership should relate to future goals.

13 Candidate Form Visit the NJHS Tab of Mrs. Fontaine’s web-site to download Word Document. Document may be typed into for clarity. No attachments are required nor will be considered. Hard copy due Mrs. Fontaine by October 19th. Late forms are marked as such and considered last. Pages should not be stapled together.

15 Membership Members must continue to exhibit excellence in the five core criteria to continue membership with the NJHS. GPA of 3.65 20 Hours of Community Service Participation in JFK NJHS Activities Attend NJHS meetings Maintain a pristine behavioral record Students will not be reconsidered for membership after a dismissal has occurred.
