Alabama THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) is the only federal agency whose mission includes support for all fields of fundamental science and engineering. BY THE NUMBERS Alabama in FY 2016 $46 Million: NSF funds awarded th: National ranking in NSF funds 16: NSF-funded institutions 175: NSF grants awarded 2: NSF research centers/facilities “People want to invest in the future—in solutions that will have a real impact on our health, education and our economy. So the state and community want us to develop our ideas and capitalize on opportunities to lead.” −Dr. Ray L. Watts, President, University of Alabama at Birmingham EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED RESEARCH IN ALABAMA NSF-funded researchers at the University of Alabama Tuscaloosa have demonstrated that adding naturally occurring organic matter from fish and plants significantly accelerated microbial degradation of crude oil in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Research conducted by the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the University of South Florida identified that organisms in the Antarctic Ocean protect themselves from predators by producing high levels of chemicals that are poisonous. This was not previously thought to commonly occur in coldwaters. New insights on hormone secretion from Auburn University could improve treatments for diabetes and obesity. Researchers developed a simple, high-performance technique for detecting hormones and proteins in blood. Courtesy: INVESTMENT IN SCIENCE = INVESTMENT IN ALABAMA Alabama has about 6,800 high technology businesses that employ 162,000 people. 1 4 percent of Alabama residents work in science and engineering occupations.1 NSF-funded research contributed to the generation of 211 patent awards in Alabama between 2000 and University of Alabama at Birmingham ranks 39th among U.S. academic institutions in terms of science and engineering expenditures.1 Alabama companies received $11 million in venture capital in Alabama universities awarded nearly 2800 masters and doctorate degrees in science, engineering and technology fields in 1 Science and Engineering Indicators: 2016, NSF 2 R&D Dashboard Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF)

Alabama Since 1952, NSF has supported nearly 50,000 graduate students through research fellowships. Alabama received $20 million in NSF educational funding in FY 2016. THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) not only funds cutting-edge research at institutions across the country; NSF’s education initiatives ensure the U.S. will remain a global leader in innovation for generations to come. EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN ALABAMA A team of researchers at Tuskegee University is providing hand-on science activities for K-8 students. The demonstrations teach kids about polymers made from metals and organic materials. Funding from NSF is helping Oakwood College improve its undergraduate chemistry program. The school acquired chemistry equipment to provide students with the experiences needed to prepare them for graduate studies. Lawson State Community College teaches students skills in advanced technology using a modular production system. The real-time learning prepares students for jobs with Alabama manufacturers. The Pathways to Mathematics program is preparing 25 math teachers for Mobile County public schools. The program will double the number of math teachers who earn their certification in math from the University of South Alabama. Courtesy: “The most important thing we can do for our state is increase the number of young people in Alabama with a degree.” − Dr. Judy Bonner, Former President of the University of Alabama “Universities have a substantial impact on the economies of their states and local regions. They create jobs, bring in revenues from outside sources that result in local expenditures, and they educate the future workforce.” − Dr. John M. Mason, Jr., Vice President for Research and Economic Development Auburn University Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF)
