He was known as Richard the Lionheart as it was said he was as brave and strong as a lion! As soon as Richard was crowned King he wanted to leave and go and fight in the crusades. He sold everything he could in order to get money for the crusade (for wars always cost a great deal of money), and then he sailed away. He was so desperate to raise money that he said “I would have sold London if I could have found a buyer”. He left his younger brother, Prince John in charge and set sail to recapture Jerusalem.

As soon as Richard arrived in Jerusalem he realised that the battles were very different to what he was used to. The leader of the Muslim army was an equally great warrior called Saladin. When his soldiers entered the city of Jerusalem, they were not allowed to kill civilians, rob people or damage the city. The more successful Saladin was, the more he was seen by the Muslims as being their natural leader.

When Richard became ill with fever, Saladin offered the services of his personal physician. Saladin also sent him fresh fruit with snow, to chill the drink, as treatment. When Richard lost his horse, Saladin sent him two replacements. Richard suggested to Saladin that Palestine, Christian and Muslim, could be united through the marriage of his sister Joan of England, to Saladin's brother, and that Jerusalem could be their wedding gift, but Saladin said no. Fight for Jerusalem! The Loss of the White Ship, or, How a Prince was Drowned Richard was determined to get to Jerusalem and was prepared to take on Saladin. Regardless of this, the Christians suffered badly from the heat and lack of fresh water. The two leaders fought many battles, but also started to respect and admire each others skills in battle. Each were seen as great warriors and shared many of the same values.

Truce! The Loss of the White Ship, or, How a Prince was Drowned Soon after the two commanders agreed on a three year truce and Saladin promised that no harm would be done to the Christian pilgrims who came to the Holy Land.
