Data interpretation Dependent and Independent Variables Every set of data has dependent and independent variables. The independent variable is put into the set of data (input). The dependent variable is the output based on the input.

Tables are helpful for organizing raw data. Charts (or bar/histogram) are displayed as non-touching vertical bars. Circle (or pie) graphs are divided into sectors representing an event frequency. Line graphs compare the relationship between two quantities (x vs. y).

Remove any parentheses. Remove fractions by multiplying each term with the LCD. Move like terms together on both sides of the equation. Isolate the variable by multiplying both sides of the equation by the reciprocal of the coefficient of the variable. Check the solution.

The absolute value of a number (n), written as |n|, is the distance between the number n and zero on the number line. |n| = n when n is a positive number |n| = -n when n is a negative number
