Title Factors associated with viral suppression among adolescents living with HIV in Cambodia “No conflicts of interest to declare”
2
Background Compared to their adult counterparts, adolescents living with HIV on antiretroviral therapy (ART): Have poorer rates of treatment adherence Poorer rates of viral suppression Higher mortality rates. This study investigated factors associated with viral suppression among adolescents living with HIV in Cambodia.
3
Methods Cross sectional study in August 2016
Adolescents living with HIV: years old 328 respondents (32%- adult ART clinics) 11 ART clinics 10 provinces/municipality Viral suppression definition: <1,000 copies/ml
4
Results Variables in the final model Viral suppression AOR (95% CI)
P-value Longer duration on ART 0.98 ( ) 0.01 Higher most recent CD4 count 0.96 ( ) 0.002 Being aware that they were receiving ART No Reference Yes 0.38 ( ) <0.001 Receiving care and treatment from Pediatric clinic Adult clinic 2.87 ( ) Knowing that HIV is transmitted through unprotected sex with people living with HIV 0.53 ( ) 0.04 Understanding that there is no cure for AIDS 0.42 ( ) 0.03
5
Conclusions Viral load suppression rates: considerably high, but lower than global target of 90% Associated factors include: Longer duration on ART Higher most recent CD4 count Being aware that they were receiving ART Knowledge about HIV and ART Areas for program improvement: Treatment literacy Understanding of HIV to prepare for transition from pediatric to adult HIV care
