Strengths Building: How It Works
Investment (time spent practicing, developing your skills, and building your knowledge base) Talent (a natural way of thinking, feeling or behaving) Strength The ability to consistently perform at a high level. Talents are things you use without even thinking about it, you can’t not use them, they are automatic. They may be so automatic that you think everyone has them. This assessment helps identify these raw talents, so you can build on them with knowledge and skills (through education, internships, activities, etc.). Talent: naturally recurring pattern of thought, feeling, or behavior that can be productively applied (p. 2) Skill: basic ability to perform the specific steps of an activity Knowledge: facts and lessons learned Strength: talents refined with knowledge and skill. “When you have supplemented your greatest talents with knowledge and skill to the point at which you can provide consistent, near-perfect performance in a given activity, you have a strength.” Unlike “talent,” “skill” and “knowledge” can be acquired.
10
How accurately do you feel your StrengthsQuest results represent you?
Very/ Spot on Mostly Somewhat Who is this person? It’s obviously not me. Another way to phrase this would be, “Do you think your strengthsquests results accurately reflect you?” Ask for feedback from a few participants. If someone on the “not at all” responds, suggest that they get feedback from others that know them well and also suggest that it is fine to claim other strengths. can mention how she felt “input” was off until she realized it could be collecting knowledge, not just things. The five strength combination can be very unique for different people. (33 million combinations possible).
11
Your Individual Strengths
Using Your Strengths! Your Individual Strengths Write down a specific example from the past month that demonstrates one of your strengths in action. Put space to write about this on the handout with the writing example. Have people write for a few minutes and then group into pairs of two to discuss. After ask for a few volunteers to talk. Ask for examples - Perhaps mention that it would be helpful to highlight the specific things that resonate with you from your reports. Your Signature Theme Report (5, with full descriptions) Insight Report (your 5 themes, with personalized insights “What makes you stand out”) Insight and Action-Planning Guide (all of above, with examples and ideas for action Use the “Affirming” chapter of the book to affirm each of your strengths AND to understand what makes each strength so valuable.
12
Using Your Strengths! Difficulties Claiming Strengths Yes No
In the past, have you viewed any of your top five strengths in a negative light? Use the Kathleen example and my own about positivity and being seen as a “cheerleader” type. When people volunteer answers have them read the definition of the strength for context. Do you think some are better than others? Yes No
13
Difficulties Claiming Strengths
Using Your Strengths! Difficulties Claiming Strengths Taking your strengths for granted Fear of appearing arrogant if you affirm your strengths Difficulty seeing how these strengths might help you achieve your goals OK to claim strengths not on your list. (They’re not necessarily weaknesses.) Possible Issues (p. 22) 1. Are themes not listed in my five a weakness? 2. What if I think I have talent in an additional theme that wasn’t listed? (Claim it!) 3. Is having talent a positive experience? 4. Difficulties claiming one’s strengths (next slide) Handout on claiming strengths.
14

Strengths & Leadership
Executing: Team members who have a dominant strength in the Executing domain are those whom you turn to time and again to implement a solution. These are the people who will work tirelessly to get something done. People who are strong in the Executing domain have an ability to take an idea and transform it into reality within the organization they lead. Influencing: People who are innately good at influencing are always selling the team's ideas inside and outside the organization. When you need someone to take charge, speak up, and make sure your group is heard, look to someone with the strength to influence. Relationship Building: Relationship builders are the glue that holds a team together. Strengths associated with bringing people together -- whether it is by keeping distractions at bay or keeping the collective energy high -- transform a group of individuals into a team capable of carrying out complex projects and goals. Strategic Thinking: Those who are able to keep people focused on "what they could" be are constantly pulling a team and its members into the future. They continually absorb and analyze information and help the team make better decisions. What are three strengths your leadership style exhibits What are areas (skills, qualities, etc.) does your leadership style need to work on?
