15 Just a Dream Chris Van Allsburg is the author of this book and The Sweetest Fig and The Wreck of Zephyr. What was unusual or interesting about the books we read earlier by this author? Mt. Everest: The name of the highest mountain on Earth.

16 Character Development
Who is Walter, and what do we find out about him? What happens to Walter in this story? How is this story similar to The Wreck of the Zephyr or The Sweetest Fig? You need to remember that stories are built around interesting characters and that authors help us get interested in characters by showing us, through their actions, thoughts, and speech, what the characters are like.

17 Analyzing an Excerpt from the Story
Open your student writing handbooks to page 15, where a passage from Just a Dream is reproduced. Quietly read through this passage. Look up when you are finished. We will discuss it as a class. What words can you use to describe Walter? What do these things tell us about Walter’s personality? What do the things that Walter says reveal about him?

18 Independent Writing For the next 20 to 30 minutes you are to continue writing fiction drafts. Work on a story you started earlier. Start a new story. Develop a character’s or characters’ personality in a story that you have already written.

19 Sharing Pick out one sentence from today’s writing time that you like. Make sure that sentence shows your creativity. Which sentences made you become interested in someone’s writing? What question do you want to ask a classmate about his or her writing?
