1 Structure of the muscular system
Know the main muscles Identify three different types of muscle How movement occurs and link to skeletal system

2 Types of Muscle Skeletal muscle (voluntary muscle) because they are under conscious control. Cardiac muscles (involuntary) work automatically, constantly e.g. walls of the heart. Involuntary muscles again cannot control. In blood vessels have to keep contracting to allow crucial body functions.

3 Muscle & Movement Kerboodle interactive.
Muscles only pull cannot push. Work in pairs one contracts (shortens) the other relaxes (lengthens). Origin, Insertion, Prime mover and Antagonist. Our muscles always maintain slight tension this is known as “muscle tone” this helps with core stability as the main muscles maintain correct alignment of the spine and pelvis. Good posture.

4 Muscular Contractions
Isotonic can be concentric or eccentric these are contractions with movement. (Think of Lucozade drinks for movement) E.g. pull up on way up. As the bicep is contracting and shortening, is concentric. Isometric there is no movement of the limb or joint but there is tension in the muscles. E.g. tug of war, rugby scrum

5 Muscle Contractions Can you tell which one is concentric and which ones is eccentric? Which one is isometric?

6 Muscle movement analysis
Kerboodle interactive flexors etc. Movement video. Task: What are the main movements actions e.g. throwing jumping etc. involved with these muscles: Biceps & triceps Hamstrings and Quadriceps Abdominals Pectorals Gastroncnemius
