Welcome to Open House 2017 Mr. Degitz-Fries Honors AP Calculus BC

2 A Little Bit about me… Momence High School class of ’92 – Valedictorian Maryville University – Bachelor of Science in Math 1996 – Summa Cum Laude Maryville University – Master of Arts in Math Education 2000 30 hours of post graduate work in graduate mathematics (18 hours) through UMSL and graduate education (12 hours) through Webster and Truman. Pursuing National Board Cert. (please sign release form if it’s OK to use your child & their work in my analysis of my teaching).

3 This is my 22st year teaching at Parkway South
(17th teaching Calculus) Married to Brian for almost three years 3 sons – Austin (21), Caleb (16), Hayden (14)

4 You Child WANTS a Calculator
TI-84 (or 83) is fine if your child already has one – new CX version out in full COLOR This will do everything your child needs for Calculus About $110 Many Colleges still use this family of Calculator

5 Do you want to give them an “Edge”? Then… go TI-Nspire CAS
2 Choices: NEW N-spire CX (in full COLOR, rechargeable battery), N-spire touchpad (regular batteries) Touchpad (not CX)– can order an 84 faceplate also so you get two calculators for the price of one (but not in color) CAS model (only online) Computes Derivatives, Integrals, Power Series, and many Algebraic expressions and equations symbollically and gives a simplified answer 3-D Graphing CAN use both on the AP and SAT CAN NOT use CAS on my tests or ACT About $135 in stores or online

6 My Website: https://www. parkwayschools
My Website: Teacher Web Pages (on side), Scott Degitz-Fries Homework and activities posted every night Upcoming tests and quizzes will be listed on the date they will be given Notes can be posted if a planned absence is upcoming Let’s take a quick look... Mr. Degitz-Fries’ Homepage

7 Key Calculus Options 1. UMSL Credit:
- 5 credit Hours for Calculus 1 only (no Calculus 2 credit available here) - I’m on the adjunct faculty so no extra work to get credit other than grade in class - Sign up online at then print and bring to school for signatures - Turn in sign ups at South on Sept. 14th - Cost: $330 (Cheap for college credit) - ONLY transfers to select schools (i.e. MO state schools, some St. Louis schools, etc. - check with your colleges of interest) - usually grade transfers with credit

8 2. The AP (YEA!!! The Biggie!!!) - Transfers anywhere in the country - Test is in May - Credit for Calculus 1 AND Calculus 2 (this is between 8 and 15 hours of college credit) - This is the ONLY way to get credit for the Calculus 2 they’re working so hard to learn - Cost is about $90 - Check what colleges require to accept credit (3, 4, 5???) - I HIGHLY recommend taking this whether doing UMSL or not - We’ll study extensively for this in class and at study sessions. - Most colleges just transfer the credit

9 REMIND I will be using the REMIND app occasionally this year to send out reminders to students about tests, quizzes, assignment changes, etc. Texts go one way (from app to them) – no ability to reply or communicate They do not have to participate if they don’t want to To sign up, they just need to follow directions on the syllabus (many already have) You may also get texts or s from me through ParentLink this year.

10 OK it’s time… Let’s get to the rules and grades…

11 Thorough and accurate homework completion is the key to success in Calculus…
SO… Let’s sing about it!!!
