2. Welcome to Year 1
Aims
To provide parents/carers with key information about Year 1
To provide an opportunity to meet the Year 1 teachers
To provide an opportunity to ask any questions/discuss any specific issues you may have about your child

3. General Approach
As a school, we believe that children learn best when they are motivated, excited and interested.
We encourage this by creating enjoyable and motivating learning themes that link the National Curriculum subjects together.
We try to enrich these themes with the use of visitors, trips and events.

5. Drop off and Collection
Drop off and collection is from the classroom doors, as it is in Year R.

Doors open at 8.35am
All children should be in school by 8.45am at the latest
We encourage children to say goodbye at the door
Punctuality and attendance is important

Doors open at 3.00pm
Key information is given to the children at the end of day –please minimise distractions
Pupil Collection Books, kept at the office the same as in Year R
Interventions at 8.50am
Lowest 20% for attendance

6. What does your child need for school?
Essentials
A water bottle – just water please
Book bag – we do not check book bags for letters/reply slips
Jacket/jumper – weather dependent
Toys
School policy that no toys are allowed
School PE T Shirts available in September

8. Reading, Spelling and Homework
Children read with an adult at least once a week in school
They also read within Sound Groups and English lessons
Daily phonics sessions

Short spelling sessions to practise the Year 1 Common Exception words
Homework
The most important thing to do at home is to hear your child read
As in Year R there will be Education City homework and sometimes the homework will be linked to the Learning Theme

9. Reading Diary
We will have new reading diaries next year, with a slightly different format.
Children change books on Mondays and Fridays, and at other points in the week if needed
When the children change their books we will not write in the Reading Diary. However we will write in them if we hear your child read individually or as part of a group.

10. Morning Activities
At the start of Year 1 the children will come into set activities similar to what they have been used to in Year R.
As the year progresses the children will begin Guided Reading in a small group with an adult.

17. Lunchtime 180 children in the school Lunchtimes are staggered
Year R children all have lunch together starting at 12.00
Year 1 and Year 2 children have a playtime from – and then go in for their lunch
No time restrictions on eating

18. More Key information.
In Year 1 we work within the National Curriculum. The children no longer have Learning Journals but can still bring in their achievements to share in Celebration Assemblies on Friday.
Transition between Year R and Year 1. The current class teacher of the children will talk to their new Year 1 teacher about each child in their new class.
Phonics Test: There is a national phonics test for all Year 1 children that takes place for in June. The children will need to use their sounds to sound blend real and nonsense words.
Ways to help – Talk to your children about their school day and read at home. More ideas of ways to help will be handed out at the first parents evening in October.

19. Information Sharing
Please check the school blog to find out what we have been up to. It is updated each Friday with photos and information.
Key dates and information can also be found on the school website.
Letters are sent home in book bags and spare copies of letters are kept in the office if needed.

20. Home/School communication
We have an open door policy and are always happy to talk to you, either at the start or end of the day.
If you would like to discuss anything and are not able to speak to us at the door please feel free to the school office or ring the school and leave a message.
