1 ECLIPSES

2 Fun Fact:

3 Raindrops can fall as fast as 20 miles per hour.

4 An eclipse is when an object blocks another object from the Sun.

5 Because of the tilt (5o) of the Moon's orbit
Because of the tilt (5o) of the Moon's orbit. The Moon usually passes above or below the Earth during the new moon and full moon phase.

6 That is why we do not experience eclipses twice a month.

7

8 An eclipse can only happen when both the sun and the moon arrive near one of the crossing points.

9 There are two types of eclipses:
1) Solar Eclipse:

10 For a solar eclipse to occur an object must be blocking out the Sun.

11 If the Moon lines up with the Sun and Earth at the new moon phase, it blocks the Sun's light from Earth, creating a solar eclipse.

12 Since the moon is much smaller than the Earth it casts a smaller shadow and only some portions of
the Earth will see a solar eclipse.

13 Even though the moon is 400 times smaller than the sun it can fully block out the sun (Total eclipse) because it is 400 times closer to the earth.

14 Even so, it is very rare that people will see a total solar eclipse since the umbra of the moon only covers about 167 miles.

15 The moon casts two shadows
on the Earth’s surface. Therefore creating two types of Eclipses.

16 The Penumbra is the lighter of the two shadows
The Penumbra is the lighter of the two shadows. And the people that are in it will experience a partial solar eclipse.

17

18

19 The Umbra is the darker of the two shadows
The Umbra is the darker of the two shadows. And the people that are in it will experience a total solar eclipse.

20 A Solar Eclipse occur roughly 2-5 times a year.
A total solar eclipse happens once every 18 months. In any given location on Earth, a total solar eclipse happens only once every 360 years.

23

24 This is known as the path of totality.

31 The maximum time for a total solar eclipse is 7 minutes & 40 sec.

33 The second type of an eclipse is:
2) Lunar Eclipse

34 A lunar eclipse occurs during the full moon phase and the moon falls in the shadow of the earth.

35 A partial lunar eclipse occurs when the moon is in the penumbra
A partial lunar eclipse occurs when the moon is in the penumbra. And a total lunar eclipse is when the moon falls in the umbra.

36 Unlike the solar eclipse a lunar eclipse is visible from everywhere on the half of Earth from which the Moon is visible at that time.

37

38

39 The maximum time a lunar eclipse can last is 3 hours and 40 min.

40 Total Lunar eclipse

41 The longest time the Moon can stay in totality during a lunar eclipse is 1 hour 40 minutes.

42 When there are two full moons in one month it is called a blue moon.

45 The moon really does not turn blue
The moon really does not turn blue. The only time the moon will look more blue is when there is smoke or clouds reflecting light.
