Room 23 February 6-10, 2017 Language Arts Word Study Important Dates:
This week we continued with our theme, “Earth’s Explorers.” We read the story, Fox, Beware! and practiced comparing and contrasting with this story. Students then took this skill and practiced comparing and contrasting with their Just Right Books during reading circle. We reviewed alliteration and searched for examples in the poem, The Sky. We learned three new vocabulary words: find, splash, depend Word Study This week we continued to practice with the long /o/ sound. We learned about vowel teams with long /o/ and practiced with words from word families –oad and –old. We practiced adding and taking away letters to form new words. We added new words to our word wall. Please practice these at home. They are: road, toe, cold As we are getting further into the year, spelling is becoming more difficult for some students. Please make sure you are reviewing our phonics skills at home. Important Dates: February 14: Valentine’s Day February 16: Zoo Field Trip forms due! (even if you are not signing up to be a volunteer, I still need to know if you’re paying the fee or using a zoo membership) February 20: No School March 1: White button down shirts due March 1–3: Half days for parent-teacher conferences Reminders Weekly reports to be signed and returned Monday. **Please make sure your child is reading at least 10-15 minutes every night, or at least some nights(!), either independently or with an adult! Alternates for the week:
Math We continued with Chapter 10: Weight. In this chapter students will compare things based on their weight using the terms light, heavy, and as heavy as and find the weight of things in nonstandard and standard units of measurement. Science We wrapped up our Rainforest unit and started a new unit, Magnets! Be sure to check out the animoto video ed earlier this week to see our amazing rainforest and your child’s hard work! This week we learned the properties of a magnet. Students learned that magnets can pull and push, only attract to steel and iron, and have a north and south side. We also learned how to separate magnetic objects from non-magnetic objects faster. Social Studies We had a lot of fun counting in Japanese. We counted, chanted, and made a mini-book on numbers 1-5 in Japanese. Ask your child to count for you! 1. ichi (ee-chee) 2. ni (knee) 3. san (sahn) 4. shi (she) 5. go (go) We also read the book, If I Lived in Japan. Students learned a little about Japanese culture and used context clues to try to figure out some of the Japanese words. Ask them if they can tell you how to say any words in Japanese!
