ECM is hard!
5
Based on 20 years of industry data, we can say that nearly 50 percent of all ECM programs fail just from a technology perspective. And of the 50 percent that succeed, half of those fail to really provide value to the business Lane Severson (CMS Wire)
11
Things are worse in Calgary!
Less public scrutiny (direct accountability) Unlimited funds (well.. a couple of years ago) Companies have multiple platforms (through acquisition and divestiture) Highly regulated (indirect accountability)
12
A Real Conversation….. How much has the platform cost you?
6 M the first year and 2 M per year after that, so about 12 How many records are in the system? Zero
13
Adoption is the problem
14
What’s the answer?
15
Programs that succeed are the ones that build good relationships with the business, take the time to understand the value chain and then build applications that the business perceives as valuable. Lane Severson (CMS Wire)
16
Systems are born on a scale
SharePoint Most Everyone Else 3rd party add-ons Modules Collaboration Compliance
18
It must be awkward for Microsoft, having a product out there that people use too much and too often;
Scott Robinson (Tech Republic)

Why isn’t Everyone using SharePoint for ECM?
24
Why aren’t we all SharePoint ECM-ing?
It is an increasing trend Some of us are integrating Checkboxes on an RFP response (the way the market wants to buy) Records’ Manager market perception of SharePoint as an RM platform Perception that it needs to many add-ons What our friends are doing Intellectual honesty The long duration of projects Careers
25
Don’t integrate multiple ECM platforms
Seldom successful It’s expensive! (licensing for multiple platforms, connector licensing, consulting, infrastructure) – more than SharePoint + add-ons It limits the business value, adoption and compliance Funds are directed to integration efforts instead of business solutions Not all aspects integrate (paring down of functionality) Increases risk Takes longer to implement Multiple document locations
26
The way the market wants to buy is wrong
The market thinks the platform should do everything Not realistic Not necessarily the best solution Highly focussed companies that specialize and invest vs companies that are just trying to complete checkboxes Dose it even exist? White labeled (maybe stuck with an older version) Purchased (lack of future investment) Too simple (built something simple to meet a requirement\check box) Still add extra cost
30
Market is full of great add-ons

?
