SIMPLIFYING ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS

Simplify these expressions

Terms Terms in an algebraic expression are separated by plus and minus signs. Each plus or minus sign belongs to the term after it. This expression has 4 terms x2+y+3z-5g

Like terms Like terms have the same combination of letters.
Like terms can be combined. 3x+5x=8x 5x2-7x2=-2x2 3x2-5x -can’t be combined as there is a different combination of letters.

Problem A square has sides equal to 2x. Write down an expression for the perimeter Draw a diagram Perimeter = 2x+2x+2x+2x = 8x If the perimeter is 32cm, calculate the value of x. 8x=32 x=4cm 2x 2x
