Setting Up Your Interactive Notebook
What is an interactive notebook? A notebook that is organized in such a way as to help you find important information easily
2
Interactive science notebook
Bring your journal to class everyday Keep it neat! It will be graded throughout each marking period. If you make a mistake, don’t scribble-out. Put a thin line through the mistake or white it out. All assignments should be dated and given a title, then placed in the table of contents. Page numbers must be on every page in the upper, outside corners. Any key terms should be placed in your index with the page number it can be found on. Use the front AND back of your pages. Don’t leave a lot of empty space. You may put more than one topic on a page. Handouts should be glued or taped (no staples). These handouts should not be hanging out of your notebook! If you need help refer to teacher’s INB.
3
Page Numbering You will number your pages as you use them. This way if you “mess up” and need to rip out a page you can do so throughout the year. For now let’s number the first 6 pages of your INB to get things rolling both the front and back of each page get a number, begin by writing the number 1 on the top right hand corner of the first page flip the page and in the top left hand corner write the number 2 continue this way until you have written the first 6 page numbers this way we can set up your table of contents.
4
Table of Contents At the top of page number 1 write - Table of Contents The Table of Contents will need three columns, with the center column being the widest Use a ruler to create these columns and label them as follows: Date Title Page #
5
Table of Contents Set up the same columns on pages 2, 3, 4 and 5 of your INB
6
The start of each unit. At the beginning of each unit you will be given a page with an overview of the unit and key vocabulary. It will look similar to what you see here.
7
You must… Review the unit page with your teacher/classmates
Take note of key vocabulary. When you define that term in your notes make sure to highlight and place the page number next to the term. Before the unit begins you will fill out the section “Explain something you hope to understand better by the end of this unit” After the unit ends you will fill out the section “What is something new you learned during this unit” This will all be points toward your notebook check for each unit!
