The events of Chapter 17 are likely the events that have already happened at the beginning of the great tribulation.
Chapter 17 represents a description of the fall of the Religions system of Babylon.
Chapter 18 represents a description of the fall of the Political system of Babylon.
CHAPTER 17
The greatest enemy to the true Christianity, is a false or empty religious system. Those who have partaken of that system have become consumed by it’s teachings and activities which are not established by Christ.
It is clear, in the end times, that the church has prostituted herself and has become the “harlot” or the prostitute of the government of the beast and has sold itself to the ‘highest’ bidder.
The prostitute is sitting on a 7-headed beast that has 10 horns. This is the same beast as described in 13:1, the revived roman empire. By the description of 17:3-4, the harlot has a lot of control and is supported by the political system of the beast.

She founded the city of Babylon
She was the High Priestess of Idol Worship
Had a son called: Tammuz
Tammuz was called the “savior of the people.”
They said Tammuz was killed by a wild animal and then came back to life
Babylonian worship often included the mother and child, sprinkling ‘baptisms’ and prostitution of a group of virgins for the temple.
The wife of Nimrod, was actually the founder of the city of Babylon. She established the “Babylonian Mysteries” which included secret religious rites as part of the worship of the idols of Babylon.
She was called Semerimas
She was the high priestess of Idol Worship
She gave birth to a son : Tammuz, who she said was a miraculous birth. Tammuz was considered the ‘savior of the people’ and therefore, a false messiah.
Some of Jeremiah and Ezekiel’s objections to false religions involved the worship of Tammuz and the “Queen of Heaven.”
The Worship of Baal and Religions of Canaan started from this kind of worship in Babylon. In fact BAAL and TAMMUZ are considered the same person.
The Babylonian cults eventually made their way to Rome

The enemy of the True Church Her position shows support and control Beast is same as one in Revelation 13:1 Clothing: Purple and Red
The true enemy of the church is not “no religion” it a false religion. The hardest people to preach to or to instruct in Biblical teaching is not those who have never believed, but those who believe in a false religion.
The fact that she is riding on the beast shows that the political system / government is supporting her leadership and system. But, it also shows that she is in control, until the Great Tribulation, 3 ½ years after the rapture of the church.
The scene of Revelation 17:1-2 happens prior to chapter 13 because the Beast.
This is the 1st half of Daniel’s 70th week (first ½ of the 7 year tribulation)
The fact that the apostate church of Revelation will marry the satan led government, shows how sinful the end time church will become.
If you look through history, the only World Church ever to be formed will be this one, the spiritual Babylon of Revelation: which occurs after the true Christian church is raptured; no longer on the earth.
Golden Cup: Spiritual adultery is the worse sin described in the Bible. As the alliance with the government increases, spiritual truth and purity decreases.
