Scheduled to begin Fall 2017 PENDING final University approval
Revisions to the Requirements for the Major in Criminal Justice & Criminology (CJUS) Scheduled to begin Fall 2017 PENDING final University approval Use arrow keys or click mouse to advance
2
The CJUS Department is seeking to revise the requirements for the CJUS major.
These revisions are scheduled to go into effect in the Fall semester, pending final University approval. Although we anticipate that all of the revisions will be approved, currently the approval process is not yet completed. However, we have been given permission from the Dean’s office to begin informing students of these changes so that they can plan their Fall schedule accordingly.
3
Why are the requirements being revised?
The Department believes these revisions will: Streamline the way students progress through the CJUS major Enhance students’ academic experience Provide students with additional training/skills that will better prepare them for their careers after graduation
4
What do these changes mean for students who are already officially declared CJUS majors?
Students who officially declare CJUS as their major prior to the Fall semester can choose to remain under the current requirements or choose to follow the new requirements. Students who switch from the current to the new requirements will not lose any CJUS credits they have already earned. NOTE: Students who switch to the new requirements cannot later switch back. Students who declare CJUS as their major in the Fall 2017 semester or later must follow the new requirements. This includes current Pre-CJ students who will not officially declare the CJUS major until Fall ‘17 or later.
5

Frequently Asked Questions
17
I am already a CJUS major
I am already a CJUS major. Should I stay under the current requirements or switch to the new ones? CJUS majors who are nearing the completion of the current requirements may find it easier to remain under the current requirements. Otherwise, the choice to switch or stay is largely a matter of which guidelines students prefer. Remember: if you switch to the new requirements you cannot switch back. Contact your CJUS advisor if you wish to discuss. I am already a CJUS major. How do I notify the CJUS Department of my decision to switch (or stay with the current) requirements? These revisions are pending final approval from the University. Once the Department has been granted final approval, you will receive information about how to notify the CJUS Department of your decision to switch or stay. I am currently a Pre-CJUS major. Can I complete the current requirements? Only students who are officially declared as CJUS majors prior to the start of the Fall ‘17 semester have the option to choose which set of requirements to follow. All other students must follow the new requirements.
18
I have other questions. Whom should I contact?
I am currently a Pre-CJ major. Do I have to take the Undergraduate Admissions Essay (UAE) in order to declare CJUS as my major? No. As the Department prepares to implement the new set of requirements, the UAE has been removed as a requirement to declare the major (effective immediately). I failed the UAE twice, and was not able to declare CJUS as my major. What do these changes mean for me? Students who failed the UAE can now declare the CJUS major. I have other questions. Whom should I contact? Current CJUS majors who need advising assistance should contact Professor Sue Hodge, CJUS Advising Coordinator: ; Current Pre-CJ majors who need advising assistance should contact CLAS Advising Office: Undeclared students who need advising assistance should contact their assigned advisor. For all other (non-advising) questions about these revisions, please contact Dr. Lyn Exum, Associate Chair of the CJUS Department: ;
