7 Basic Principles Popular Sovereignty: Previously thought that monarchs claimed power from God. The Preamble gives power to the people. Limited Government: Previously believed that British king ruled them harshly. In Constitution, the government gets power from Constitution. Plus, everyone must obey the law.

7 Basic Principles Separation of Powers: To limit the power of the government. Three branches with it’s own duties. Legislative Branch (Congress) – Passes laws Executive Branch (President) – Carries out laws Judicial Branch (Supreme Ct, Federal Ct) – Interprets laws

7 Basic Principles Checks and Balances: Safeguards against abuse of power. No branch of government will become too great. Legislative: See chart on Pg. 257 Executive: See chart on Pg. 257 Judicial: See chart on Pg. 257

7 Basic Principles Federalism: Constitution grants power to federal gov’t and other powers to states. Powers not clearly given belong to states. Republicanism: Citizens elect representatives to carry out their own will. Individual Rights: Protects individual freedoms (speech, religion, trial by jury).
