'The departure of Jesus from Earth into the presence of God'
What is it? 'The departure of Jesus from Earth into the presence of God' In acts 1:9-11 in the Bible. Takes place 40 days after the resurrection.

What happened? Jesus is in the company of his disciples
He ascends into the clouds with them watching A cloud hides him from view and two men in white appear. They tell him that he will return:"In the same way you have seen him go into heaven".

Different views In some western churches the extinguishing of Paschal Candle, first lit on Easter, is used as a symbol of Christ leaving the Earth. Western churches also usually emphasis the humanity of Christ, by showing his wounds. He is also depicted to have risen to heaven by his own power and not that of angels. A different view developed in Syria emphasises Christ's divinity and follow the believe that he was lifted to heaven by angels.

Why is it important to Christians?
From heaven he sent the Holy Spirit down to Earth. It is his heavenly enthronement as King It is his return to his father
