1 Unit 4 Europe

2 Which of the following identifies the reason why the Portuguese brought Africans to the colony of Brazil? To build cities To work on the sugar plantations To clear land To mine gold and silver Answer is B. This refers back to Latin America and the slave trade. Think about colonization by European countries to get raw materials we will cover more about colonization in Africa.

3 What is the economic relationship between Europe and its non-renewable resources?
Europe had abundant supplies of coal and iron ore, which were used to build an industrial economy Europe had few supplies of coal and iron ore so were unable to build an industrial economy Europe had abundant supplies of gold and silver and developed a rich trade with Africa Europe did not have any non-renewable resources so they do not have much pollution Answer is A. Think about the U.K. where the industrial revolution started. “The sun never set on the United Kingdom” they had abundant coal and iron ore and used these resources to run the machines, they had colonies all over the world for the raw materials to make the products. The same was true for most of Europe they had the energy but not the raw materials.

4 Which of these best explains why Italy did not industrialize as early as its neighbor France?
More tourism Greater land areas Fewer resources Fewer mountain ranges Answer is C. Again you know what it took for the industrial revolution, energy resources and raw materials. And since the question says that Italy did not industrialize as early as France the only choice must be fewer resources since the other choices do have anything to do with resources.

5 In November 1993 the Maastricht Treaty established an international trading bloc. What is that trading bloc ? ASEAN COMESA EU NAFTA Answer is C. Remember the web-quest. You had to look this up. We have not yet talked about COMESA (Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa. ASEAN is Association of Southeast Asian Nations. And NAFTA is North American Free Trade Agreement. We talked about this during North and Latin America.

6 An important effect of mountain ranges, large rivers, and oceans coastlines on a country has often been the -- Formation of the country’s borders Growth in available fertile land Encouragement of cultural convergence Promotion of a democratic form of government Answer is A. You need to think about this question logically. How could mountain ranges, rivers, and oceans grow fertile land? When we talked about the mountain ranges in Europe they made it hard to travel therefore many different cultures grew with different languages etc. so the culture did not converge or come together. You know what a democratic form of government is and landforms don’t have anything to do with what type of government is in a country. But you know what makes up the border between Mexico and Texas.

7 in 1999, Turkey was recognized as a candidate for full membership in the European Union. Turkey’s primary goal in making this membership bid is to benefit from -- Increased humanitarian assistance from member countries Technological advances made by trading partners Military assistance from member countries in times of conflict Greater access to markets within the organization Answer is D. Back to our Web-Quest again. You learned that the European Union is a economic and political union; you know that economics has to do with money. And greater access to markets means more money.

8 Which of these had built a global empire by the 1800s?
Spain Italy United Kingdom Sweden Answer is C. This is just recall knowledge. There are some facts you just must remember. This one shouldn’t be too hard. You know before we were the United States we were a colony of England and King George. We fought a little war, you might remember, called the “American Revolution” to earn our freedom. And we talked about that there was a time when the “Sun never set on the British Empire” and we drew a diagram showing the differences between England, Great Britain and the United Kingdom.

9 Which of the following is an example of Eastern European folk art?
Writings of Shakespeare Religious cathedrals and mosques Embroidered traditional costumes Classical sculptures Answer is C. This is recall knowledge. We read and wrote about this in Chapter 13 in the Eastern Europe section. “Eastern European folk artists create items such as pottery, woodcarving, and embroidered traditional costumes.”

10 Which of the following is the best example of cultural convergence?
Different countries in Europe today have similar standards Some Turkish “guest workers” in Germany cannot read or write in German. People in the Sahel region of Africa are moving to nearby regions to escape dry conditions from drought. Some universities do not require students to study a foreign language. Answer is A. Convergence means “coming together” guest workers are not coming together if they are not learning the language. Moving to a nearby region doesn’t mean that you are taking on the culture neither does universities not requiring students to study a foreign language. You should have inferred this with the Webquest. Since many of Europe’s countries have joined or are requesting to join the EU they must have similar if not the same standards.

11 This image helped to promote the environmental movement by showing the-
Disappearance of glaciers from global warming Impact of human habitation of Earth’s surface Effect of pollution to Earth’s seas and oceans Frailty and isolation of Earth in space Answer is D. You should be able to eliminate the other answers based on the picture.

12 How would you describe Poland’s political power during the time period shown on the maps?
Steady Varying Increasing declining Answer is D. When a map is part of the question you should look at the title first, then the key/legend and then the map or maps. Compare and contrast them what is the difference between the two, what is the same? In this case this map is about Poland; notice how much smaller Poland became in the second map, Poland is smaller so gave up territory, they evidently had to give up that territory so they must not have had enough power to hold onto their territory. So their power is decreasing or declining.

13 Based on the information in these maps of Germany, what conclusion can be drawn?
Political events can cause a country’s boundaries to change. Germany has kept the same borders throughout its history. A country’s borders are entirely established by physical geography After World War II, Poland lost some of its territory to Germany Answer is A. Again, look at the title first, it tells you what you are looking at. Notice the words on the map that is information you need. In all three maps Germany has changed size and shape. In the first map Treaty must mean that a war ended, in the second map you see Hitler’s name so that must mean WWII and the third map says Reunited Germany that must mean that Germany was united again. All three of those events has to do with politics.
