The Ag shop a place to learn
The Ag mechanics shop located here at MCHS offers metals and wood working areas. Also know as the ag shop, ag mech shop or ag mechanics shop What is needed in an Ag Shop Good Lighting Adequate electrical power Proper Ventilation Portable equipment Tools to more heavy objects Sturdy benches Hand tools Vise Grounded electrical outlets

The Ag Shop Needs to be large open spaces
You will have room to build projects to develop skills You can also bring in projects from home and the farm to work on (need my permission first) A place to develop hands on experience

Ag Electrification Electricity- is a form of energy that can produce light, heat, magnetism, and chemical changes. This is done by using magnetism, engineers have developed electric motors and controls You can benefit from knowledge about electricity in the home, farm and all agriculture settings.

Knowledge of electricity includes the selection installation and maintenance of wiring and electrical equipment You will have to opportunity to learn how to do simple wiring.

Ag Buildings and Equipment
Most farmers and individuals have shop buildings and equipment to maintain Most construction and maintenance is done by the owner. Being able to build or repair structures in very importance. Projects we will be doing this year Finish floors in hog barn and upkeep Build shelters at elementary school playground Build playground at elementary school.

Drawing Plans to scale When building a project drawing plans are very important to develop Scale drawing- is object presentation on paper and uses a smaller dimension to represent a larger dimension. Example 1/4” (inch) on paper equals 1’ (foot) This means that on paper ¼” is equal to 1’ foot of actual object. the actual dimensions of the object are stated on the drawing.

Scale Drawing Drawings can also be bigger than the actual object
For example it could read 2”=1” This would mean on the drawing that for every 2” on paper the object is only 1” long. The drawn object the would be twice as large as the actual object

Practice Scale Drawing
On the top of your graph paper Draw a box that is 4’x8’ with a scale that is ¼” =1’ On the bottom of the same sheet draw box that is 2”x4” with a scale that is 2”=1” When drawing objects that are 3 dimension you have to include a top, side and front view (if object has something different on an opposite side that will need to be included too)

Plan design for a work shop table
We have a piece of material that is 5’ long, 2’ wide and 1” thick We need to design a table that will allow it to sit flush inside the table frame. What other information do we need to know? Table height, leg size, frame size, any bracing Lets figure this out

Plan Reading Means using the scale drawing to build the project from the information given. The ability to do scale drawing and plan reading is basic to all construction Farmstead Layout refers to the efficient arrangement of buildings on a farm This helps during the design phase of construction and allows for improvements or corrections to be made.

Functional Requirements of a Building
What are items need to be planned when designing a building Water Systems- sprinklers, irrigation, sinks, and sewage Electrical- it is easier to run wires before drywall or interior walls are complete

Concrete Concrete- is a mixture of portland cement, water sand and course aggregates (stones) It is used in almost every building structure Ag and non Ag related

Soil and Water Management
When constructing any type of building you have to know what you are building on top of Is the soil the proper type for a good foundation. Where does water flow or stand during times of heavy rain. Skills needed include land leveling (its hard to build on an uneven piece of land)

Land measurement- make sure the piece of land is big enough for the project Terracing- build up land to prevent erosin of soil or water from running by or in your building. Contouring- sloping land to drain off water Strip Cropping- rows of plants to prevent water erosin

Shop Size The school shop must be big enough for the class size.
It must be safe meaning free from harm or danger Shops must be efficient which means that work can be done within a minimum amount of time, energy and expense. Remember that with 20+ students there is always the chance of getting hurt and you must be paying attention at all times.

Safety Policies and Procedures
We will go through safe operation of all power tools before we start using them Never go in the shop when Mr. Bodiford is absent. You must have his permission before operating any equipment
