Sudan was originally an Egyptian State then ruled by the British, through the Egyptians) Civil War between North and South North has closer ties to Muslim world and Egypt North has more solid, expanding economy 

6 British imposed separation between North and South with "Pass Laws" that were imposed to stop spread of malaria.  The majority of Northern Sudan is Muslim while there is widespread Christianity and Animist religions in the South. The expansion of the desert and depletion of farmland has caused tension and conflict. This is a direct result of Climate Change.

Govt. uses the Janjaweed to kill hundreds of thousands in Darfur.
