4 What is mentoring? Mentoring 101

5 What is mentoring? Being a caring adult and positive role model that provides support, advice, and friendship to a child. Anyone can be a mentor. No special skills required!

6 Who are the kids? Every child can benefit from a friendship with a caring adult. Kids enrolled in our programs are from a wide variety of family dynamics and life circumstances.

7 Youth Benefits Children with a positive adult influence in their lives are: more likely to achieve high academic performance more likely to participate in extracurricular school activities less likely to have behaviour problems in school less likely to be bullied or victimized Students who meet regularly with their mentors are 52% less likely than their peers to skip a day of school and 37% less likely to skip a class (Public/Private Ventures study of Big Brothers Big Sisters). Mentors may help encourage the completion of homework and can help improve their mentees’ work ethic and/or academic skills. And besides doing better in school: Youth who meet regularly with their mentors are 46% less likely than their peers to start using illegal drugs and 27% less likely to start drinking (Public/Private Ventures study of Big Brothers Big Sisters).

20 The Mentoring Experience
What is it like to mentor? The Mentoring Experience

21 Your role as mentor No special skills required

22 Your role as mentor Be a friend to your mentee
Hang out doing regular things Listen and offer support Have fun and be a kid again Just be yourself

23 Your role as mentor Experience the difference your influence makes:
Children simply do better with a mentor They care more about their community They are more likely to reach their potential By being a mentor you will experience a transformation in a child that will help that child simply do better. Better attendance and attitude at school, high school completion, college attendance, employment improved social skills, self-esteem, life satisfaction, healthy eating and physical activity; Kids with mentors are more likely to care about their community, spend time volunteering and generally connect better with people and activities around them. And in doing better, they are much more likely to reach their potential and become contributing members of the community.

24 Build your resume while building a snowman.
Become a mentor to a young person and develop your communication and people skills.

25 Am I a good candidate? Common Concerns

26 I don’t have enough time. I can’t commit to one hour a week.
Common Concerns I don’t have enough time. I can’t commit to one hour a week. You don’t have enough time. We’re not saying you’re not busy, but we’ve been hard pressed to find someone who can’t point to one hour a week that could be used differently in order to transform the life of a child. Sarah Chan is the mother of two young kids, a piano teacher, and a Mayor’s wife. She tells us “if I can find time to volunteer, so can everyone (except maybe my husband).” You can’t volunteer every week because you work out of town, or just can’t commit to that frequency. That’s absolutely okay. What we stress more than frequency is consistency. We’ve got matches who meet every week for an hour and others who meet once a month for an entire afternoon. Both ways, the volunteer ensures it’s consistent –something the child can count on.

27 I don’t think I am a good role model to a kid.
Common Concerns I’m not the right fit. I don’t think I am a good role model to a kid. I’m not the right fit. We’re looking for a wide variety of mentors, young and old, aboriginal, metis, or other ethnicities, all kinds of cultural backgrounds and genders (although males are always in particular demand). Everyone, at every stage of their lives, has something positive to offer a child. Some kids want their mentor to be super young and hip and others need another wise figure in their life. Some want someone with the same ethno/cultural background as themselves, others are looking to learn more about their new home in Canada. Any way you look at it, kids can learn so much from you. I don’t think I will be a good role model to a kid. This is one of the most common concerns we hear from potential volunteers. Do you plan on taking kiddo to a bar? Showing her how to steal from the grocery store? We didn’t think so. Your life experiences, good and bad, will make you a great role model. Even if you’ve had a shaky past yourself, if you’ve been able to recognize that, chances are you’ll be an amazing role model.

28 Common Concerns I don’t have transportation to drive children around. I don’t have any money to spend on activities. You don’t have transportation to drive children around. That’s totally not the end of the world. You can mentor at the same location each week so you can figure out a bus schedule or get a friend or family member to drop you off. Or check out our other kinds of volunteering (In-school, Clubs, etc. as suits your organization. If you want to work with kids, we can find something that works for you. You don’t have any money to spend on activities with children. We’re experts at finding low-cost and no-cost activities. Plus, you’re only responsible for your part of the expense; the kiddo’s parents or guardians provide the money for the child to go on the outing. It means you have to confirm plans with the parents ahead of time, but it works pretty well for most of our volunteers. Oh, and there are so many other things you can do with a kid for free every day –walking in the park, making a snowman, or doing a craft are just a few examples.

29 I have kids of my own. I already volunteer.
Common Concerns I have kids of my own. I already volunteer. I have kids of my own. By no means do we expect volunteers to spend less time with their own families. We believe that a successful child starts with a caring and supportive family. But maybe you have a teenager and want to spend an hour a week with a 6 year old, or vice versa. Once, your relationship with your mentee is fully formed you can take your kids along on outings too. Think of it as setting a good example for your kids! I already volunteer. Amazing! Our community has so many fantastic organizations all doing important work and we would never want to pull you away from them. The more people supporting local non-profits and charities the better. Just do us a favour and think about if you have one additional hour. If you do, consider applying to volunteer with us too. Either way, we salute the work you’re already doing for our community!

30 Common Concerns What if we have nothing in common? What if I get stuck, not knowing what to do or how to deal with a situation? What if we have nothing in common? We’re experts at matching volunteers and children. Both of you go through an initial in-depth interview so we can learn as much as we can about each of you –your likes, dislikes, hobbies, traits –and make sure you’re interested in at least some of the same activities. You like hockey or swimming or baking? Then we’ll find you a child who does too, or at the very least, who wants to learn. What if I get stuck, not knowing what to do or how to deal with a situation? First of all, you won’t be alone. Before you meet you child, we’ll help you through a pretty thorough training process. Then you’ll meet your child with one of our support workers present. And ongoing support is near at hand, all you have to do is call. And our website has loads of ideas and thoughts about things to do, ways to react to situations or answer questions, it’s all close at hand.
