2. PSM I Goal The main goal of the Bachelor’s Degree Project I is to expose students to academic research projects enabling them to utilize the knowledge and skill gained throughout their undergraduate studies as well as enhancing their generic skills
5
PSM I Outcomes (CLO) Engineering Knowledge: Apply knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals and an engineering specialisation to the solution of complex engineering problems within project (C6, LO1) Communication: Communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with the engineering community and with society at large, such as being able to comprehend and write effective project reports and design documentation, make effective seminar presentations, and give and receive clear instructions; (P4, LO3) Investigation: Conduct investigation into complex problems using research based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of information to provide valid conclusions in project report; (C4, LO4)
6
Life Long Learning: Recognise the need for, and have the preparation and ability to engage in independent and life-long learning in the broadest context of technological change within project implementation. (A4, LO6) Project Management and Finance: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of engineering and management principles and apply these to manage projects and in multidisciplinary environments; (A4, LO9) Environment and Sustainability: Understand the impact of project in societal and environmental contexts and demonstrate knowledge of and need for sustainable development; (A4, LO12)

WRITING RESEARCH OBJECTIVE
Objectives are usually headed by infinitive verbs such as: To identify To establish To describe To determine To estimate To develop To compare To analyse To collect
16
The objectives provide an accurate description of the specific actions you will take in order to reach this aim. Can be measured. Each specific objective consists of one infinitive sentence and should be phrased in a way that makes it possible to draw a conclusion from within the scope of the thesis. Examples To determine the strength of the steel with different heat treatment To analyze the failure mode of AL2024 aluminum plate at different velocity impact.
17
RESEARCH SCOPE The scope of study refers to the parameter under which the study will be operating To write a scope of study: outline the limitations of the research the specific data used for the research the theories used to interpret the data Example: The samples will be heat treated at three different temperature which are 200 oC, 300oC and 400oC
18
Expected results The results you expect to see if your hypotheses are true (i.e., the predictions that flow from your hypotheses) What will conclude if you do not see your expected results (i.e., if your predictions are not observed)?

INTRODUCTION
23
INTRODUCTION An introduction should attract the reader's attention.
Includes: Background of Study Problem Statement Importance / Significance of Study Objective and Scope of Study An introduction should attract the reader's attention.
24
Background of Study Introduce your work to the reader
From general knowledge, then focus on your work Example:- Background of study, recent development, scenario of the project. “What did you do?” FKMP
25
Problem Statement Situation or problem that drive you to do the work or project. Example: “The corrosion and wear behaviour of this coating has been study elsewhere but, during the drilling process in oil and gas industry, both situation happen. Understanding the behaviour of this coating in this situation is then essential” FKMP
26
Importance/Significance/Rationale of Study
Shows that your study Important: may create benefit Significant: show something attractive and may be used by other researcher. Rationale; do-able and has contribute to the body of knowledge FKMP
27
Objective and Scope of Study
What do you want to achieve in this study is the objective. Scope – limitation of the study. Parameter used in this study. FKMP
28
LITERATURE REVIEW
29
The aim of a literature review is to show your reader (your supervisor) that you have read, and have a good grasp of, the main published work concerning a particular topic or question in your field. This work may be in journal, books, proceeding and magazine or any other format, including online sources.
30
It is very important to note that your review should not be simply a description of what others have published in the form of a set of summaries, but should take the form of a critical discussion, showing insight and an awareness of differing arguments, theories and approaches. It should be a synthesis and analysis of the relevant published work, linked at all times to your own purpose and rationale.
31
According to Caulley (1992) of La Trobe University, the literature review should:
compare and contrast different authors' views on an issue group authors who draw similar conclusions criticise aspects of methodology note areas in which authors are in disagreement highlight exemplary studies highlight gaps in research show how your study relates to previous studies show how your study relates to the literature in general conclude by summarising what the literature says
32
The purposes of the review are:
to define and limit the problem you are working on to place your study in an historical perspective to avoid unnecessary duplication to evaluate promising research methods to relate your findings to previous knowledge and suggest further research

METHODOLOGY
35
Methodology include: Materials used and its preparation.
Equipment (how it work, specification, precision, limitation) Parameter use and its unit (length, pressure, strength, velocity) Standard (According to standard; SIRIM, ASME, ASHRAE, BS, DIN) Testing configuration Data – table, graph, chart) Data analysis Validation & verification Calculation and data analysis.
36
Remember to do the following when writing your Methodology:
explain what methods you intend to use when researching and developing your report. use a descriptive writing approach. It is important to explain what research methods you used to collect your info. Do not include your questionnaires, interview transcripts, etc. -these go in the dissertation’s appendices.
37
Remember to do the following when writing your Methodology:
Discuss with your project supervisor the extent and level of detail required; original research will obviously require a more detailed description than a project based solely on secondary research. If someone else chooses to carry out the same or a very similar type of study, they should be able to understand and copy your methods from your descriptions.

7. PSM SEMINAR Your supervisor has their authority to bar you from attending the seminar based on your attendance. Ensure that they sign your report as approval before submission to the panel. Refer to seminar schedule daily as there is always changes. Not attending seminar= FAIL
45
PLAGIARISM ACCORDING TO THE MERRIAM-WEBSTER ONLINE DICTIONARY, TO "PLAGIARIZE" MEANS to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own to use (another's production) without crediting the source to commit literary theft to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source In other words, plagiarism is an act of fraud. It involves both stealing someone else's work and lying about it afterward.
