Chapter 10: Union in Crisis
Conner Johnson & Vitaliano Lagano
2
The Compromise of 1850 The Compromise of 1850 was an effort by congress to resolve the dispute between the north and the south over slavery. This law tried to compromise the needs of the north and the south. They allowed slavery in Washington D.C, but there was no slave trade allowed there. One provision to this was the Fugitive Slave Act.
3
Fugitive Slave Act A law making it a crime to help runaway slaves. If you caught, you could face up to 6 months in prison and a $1000 dollar fine. Commissioners $10 dollars right slave captured and $5 dollars wrong slave captured. Many Northern's hated this law because this was against everything they stood for.
4
The Kansas-Nebraska Act
In 1854 the Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed by US congress. The law allowed people in Kansas and Nebraska to decide for them selves whether or not to allow slavery in their states. This act was served as an appeal to the Missouri Compromise 1820.
5
"Bleeding Kansas" Soon after the Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed it got very violent in the territories. It developed the name "bleeding Kansas." It got this name because it was a new ground for abolitions and proslavery people to try to sway the opinion. This was a huge battle ground for the parties. Both of these parties wanted another state. If the north won the states they would have even more of the upper hand than they already did. The south wanted these states because it would help balance out the power between the Confederacy and the Union.
6
Under Ground Railroad The underground railroad was a circuit for runaway slaves to try to get free. It was not underground or trains. Their terminology for it was like the railroads. They would put them in wagons, riverboats, anything they could hid someone in and send them to a destination to the North or Canada. If the slaves were lucky the train conductors would help them out.
7
Views on Slavery Abraham Lincoln Lincoln believed slavery was an absolute evil. He maintained that all African Americans should be guaranteed "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Stephen Douglas Stephen Douglas believed that Lincoln was wrong for wanting slavery. He believed the government should let popular sovereignty decide whether a state/territory would be free or slave.
8
North and South What developments deepened the divisions between North and South? The final ruling against Dred Scott in his case. The election of Abraham Lincoln as president. John Brown being executed.
9
Harpers Ferry Harpers Ferry was the location of John Brown's Raid. John Brown planned to raid Harpers Ferry, a federal arsenal that was surrounded by possible escape routes as it was a hub of trains and canals, in order to begin a revolution that would end slavery. John Brown failed and was executed, angering northerners who viewed him as a martyr.
10
Jefferson Davis He was an American politician.
In 1861 he was elected president of the Confederacy. He believed slaves were a part of life that should be happening. But he let them figure out some of their own things. He let his slaves manage their own punishments and courts. He even educated some of them.
11
Union Collapses The president was elected without a single southern vote, so the south thought that they didn’t need to be apart of a government they had no say in. Therefor they seceded, Lincoln said that no state could secede from the Union. So the fighting broke out.
