3
Why Take Notes? Do you ever assume you don’t need to write anything down because you “heard it”? Within 2 weeks you will forget 80% of what you heard. Within 4 weeks you will remember only 5 % of what you heard. Beginning course details and/or books/materials needed for a class/project.

5
Why Take Notes? Instructors share information not available in textbooks and then make connections. Notes serve as a “file” of information. Taking notes helps you become an “active listener” and a “critical thinker”. “Passive” listening is what you do when you watch a sitcom on television or have a casual conversation with someone. “Active” listening is when you listen carefully to make sure you understand and learn the information that is being conveyed.

Annotations (Thinking Notes)
Underline the major points. Circle keywords or phrases that are confusing or unknown to you. Use a question mark (?) for questions that you have during the reading. Be sure to write your question. Use an exclamation mark (!) for things that surprise you, and briefly note what it was that caught your attention. Draw an arrow (↵) when you make a connection to something inside the text, or to an idea or experience outside the text. Briefly note your connections. Mark EX when the author provides an example. Numerate arguments, important ideas, or key details and write words or phrases that restate them.
