1 Sexually Transmitted Diseases
OBJ: I will examine the signs and symptoms of STDs. I will demonstrate an understanding of how STDs are transmitted. I will identify one option for testing and treatment.

2 BELLWORK If you contracted a STD, how would it affect your life?
Why are most teenagers not concerned about contracting STDs? Why are teenagers especially vulnerable to contracting STDs?

3 What STDs can be cured? Chlamydia Gonorrhea Syphilis Trichomoniasis

4 Chlamydia Chlamydia is the most commonly reported STD in the United States. Sexually active females 25 years old and younger need testing every year. Easy to cure, Chlamydia can impact a woman’s ability to have children if left untreated.

5 Gonorrhea Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by a bacterium. Gonorrhea can grow in the reproductive tract, including the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes in women, and in the urethra (urine canal) in women and men. The bacterium can also grow in the mouth, throat, eyes, and anus. Many men with gonorrhea are asymptomatic. When present, signs and symptoms of urethral infection in males include a white, yellow, or green urethral discharge that usually appears one to fourteen days after infection. Signs in women include increased vaginal discharge, or vaginal bleeding between periods and possible infertility.

6 Syphilis Syphilis is easy to cure in its early stages.
Signs and symptoms of syphilis include a firm, round, small, and painless sore on the genitals, anus, or mouth, or a rash on the body, especially on the palms of the hands or the soles of the feet.

7 What STDs are incurable?
HIV/AIDS Herpes HPV/Genital Warts

8 HIV/Aids HIV is a virus spread through body fluids that affects specific cells of the immune system, called CD4 cells, or T cells. Over time, HIV can destroy so many of these cells that the body can’t fight off infections and disease. When this happens, HIV infection leads to AIDS.

9 HERPES You can get genital herpes even if your partner shows no signs of the infection. If you have any symptoms (like a sore on your genitals, especially one that periodically recurs) laboratory tests can help determine if you have genital herpes. There is no cure for herpes, but treatment is available to reduce symptoms and decrease the risk of transmission to a partner.

10 Genital Warts Genital human papillomavirus (also called HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI). There are more than 40 HPV types that can infect the genital areas of males and females. HPV types can also infect the mouth and throat. Most people who become infected with HPV do not know they have it.
