Introduction exercises - text
Main Character of this lesson Davey the Dragon – A cartoon dragon who lives in a castle in the clouds. Text Main Character As Davey and Chip speak, show the bolded words from the voice over text on the screen as they’re spoken. Text Chip You can always click on me if you need help. Audio Add sounds as approrpiate to the scene Voice over text See notes below Voice over text for Davey: (Start with Davey outside the castle in the clouds) Hi! I’m Davey the Dragon, and I’m really excited you came to visit me in the Castle in the Clouds where I live! My job here in the castle is to make sure everything is just right for Princess Portia! She is on her way home from a long journey as we speak. Princess Portia is picky about position and symmetry, so we want to make sure everything in the castle is in the right place and has symmetry before she gets back from her journey. For example, the castle behind me has symmetry, or, you could also say it is symmetrical. This is because you can draw a line down the center of it (show line drawn down the center of the castle, to show two symmertrical sides) and it looks like a mirror image on each side of the line. Princess Portia loves this castle for its symmetry. Princess Portia also likes everything in its place. She likes having the doorway to the castle between two windows (highlight the two windows on each side of the entryway door) and chimneys above the castle (highlight the two chimneys above the castle). Between and on top of are position words. Do you think you can help me check to make sure everything is symmetrical and in the right place? If you need to know more about Position and Symmetry, click on Chip. If you’re ready to go, click Start. (Show arrow pointing to “Start” or make the Start button glow or pulse.) Voice over text for Chip (if clicked): Position means where something is in relation to something else. For example, (show Chip above the castle) now I’m above the castle...(show Chip below the castle) now I’m below the castle, (show Chip next to the castle now I’m next to the castle, (show Chip between the two chimneys) and now I’m between these two chimneys. Above, below, next to, and between describe where I was in relation to the castle. Symmetry means you can draw a line down the middle of something and it is the same on both sides. Like this drawing of a face! (Show Chip holding a picture of a face) You can draw a line down the center of this face (show line drawn vertically down center of face) and you will notice that the left side (Chip points to left side of face, left side as the learner is looking at it) is a mirror image of the right side. There is one eye on each side of the line, the nose is the same on each side of the line, and so is the mouth. An easy way to tell if something has symmetry is to fold it in half on the line. (Show Chip folding the face picture in half and show that the eyes/nose/mouth fold over exactly onto one another). But look what happens when I use a side view of this face. (Show Chip holding a profile of a face.) It is not symmetrical. There is no line that we can draw on this picture and have the mirror image on both sides, so we know it’s not symmetrical. (Show line drawn vertically down center and fold to show that the profile does not match up on itself. Then show line drawn horizonally down middle and fold to show that doesn’t match up either.) If you’re ready to help me make sure the castle is all ready for Princess Portia, click Start! (Show arrow pointing to “Start” or make the Start button glow or pulse.) 5

Drag and Drop Type of exercise: Drag and Drop Exercise: number & title: Exercise 1 – Which of These Has Symmetry? Question, problem main character: Princess Portia will be here just in time for dinner. Let’s make sure everything here in the dining hall has symmetry. Drag and drop objects that have symmetry to the dining table. Drag and drop objects that don’t have symmetry to the fire place. Activity 1: Which of these shapes has symmetry? Heart shape (drop on table) Diamond shape (drop on table) Symmetrical flower (drop on table) Asymmetrical flower (drop in fireplace) Activity 2: Which of these letter combinations has symmetry? HH (drop on table) PP (drop in fireplace) WW (drop on table) AA (drop on table) Activity 3: Which of these objects has symmetry? Airplane (show from the side so it’s asymmetrical) (drop in fireplace) Sunshine face (make it symmetrical) (drop on table) Snowflake (make it symmetrical) (drop on table) Baby rattle (show from side, non-symmetrical) (drop in fireplace) Thank you by main character: That was great! Thanks for your help! Princess Portia will be pleased with our dining hall. There is so much symmetry here! Positive feedback: Way to go! You really seem to understand symmetry! Negative feedback: That’s not quite right. See what happens when the object is folded in half? It doesn’t match perfectly, so it’s not symmetrical. (Show the object folding to show that it doesn’t have symmetry) Voice over text: Princess Portia will be here just in time for dinner. Let’s make sure everything here in the dining hall has symmetry. Drag and drop objects that have symmetry to the dining table. Drag and drop objects that don’t have symmetry to the fire place. See notes for Thank You and feedback responses 7

Explanation exercise 1 – text in pop up Chip
Generic text Drag and drop each item to the table if it has symmetry or to the fireplace if it does not have symmetry. Image example 1 Show a letter Y. Explanation 1 The letter Y has symmetry. See what happens when we draw a line down the center of it? (Draw vertical line) Both sides of the line match. We’d place this on Princess Portia’s table. Image example 2 Show a picture of a foot from the top. Explanation 2 This foot does not have symmetry. No matter where we draw the line down the center, the two sides don’t match (show line drawn perpendicular and the foot folding/not matching and then show a line drawn horizontal and the foot folding/not matching). We’d place this item in the fireplace. 8

Exercise 2 – design [please add graphics to field below that illustrate the design of the exercise] Show Davey the Dinosaur standing in the dining hall in front of the long table with place settings and chairs as described previously and show three empty spaces for hanging pictures on the walls behind him. As the learner makes correct choices, show the complete, symmetrical picture until all three are complete. 9

Multiple Choice Type of exercise: Multiple Choice Exercise number & title: Exercise Two: Making Symmetrical Pictures Question, problem main character Oh dear me! Looks like all the pictures on our walls have been removed! We need to make new pictures to hang on the walls before Princess Portia arrives for dinner. Remember, Princess Portia loves symmetry, so make sure you choose the correct shape to make a symmetrical picture! Activity 1: Show the left half of an ice cream cone. Show the right half, but upside down Show the right half, but with colors that don’t match Correct choice: Show the symmetrical right half Activity 2 Show this pattern on the left half: Correct choice: Activity 3 Show the left half of a tree Correct choice: show the symmetrical right half Show a horizontally flipped right half Show the left half of the tree again. Thank you by main character Thanks, that’s some great work! Princess Portia will really enjoy these symmetrical paintings! Positive feedback: Good job! You sure know symmetry when you see it! Negative feedback: Oops! Not quite! Try again. Voice over text: Oh dear me! Looks like all the pictures on our walls have been removed! We need to make new pictures to hang on the walls before Princess Portia arrives for dinner. Remember, Princess Portia loves symmetry, so make sure you match the correct shape to make a symmetrical picture! There are three pictures missing, click the picture you want to start with. (Once the picture is clicked, voice should say:) OK, look at the choices and choose the picture that would make this symmetrical. See notes for Activity 5 and the rest of the info… 10
11
Explanation exercise 2 – text in pop up Chip
Generic text Click on the picture you want to start with. You’ll notice only half the picture is showing! When you click the picture, you will be shown three choices. Click the choice that would give the picture symmetry. Let’s see how we’d do this with this clover. Image example 1 Show the left half of a symmetrical clover and three options: a right half that is flipped horizontally, an upside down right half, and the correctly colored, symmetrical right half. Explanation 1 For this clover picture, you’d choose this, because it’s symmetrical in shape and the color is correct. Image example 2 Let’s try to make this pattern symmetrical – see how the right side is missing? What would we place there to make it have symmetry? Explanation 2 The correct choice here is the first one. If you were to flip the example picture over the line, it would look like the second choice. The second choice is the symmetrical one to the first choice. 11
12
Exercise 3 – design [please add graphics to field below that illustrate the design of the exercise] Show a table cloth placed on the table in the dining hall, then show the table from above. It will look like this (the gray spots are “hot spots” where the learners can place the dragged objects): 12
13
Drag & drop Template Type of exercise: Drag & drop
Exercise: number & title: Exercise Three: Putting Things in the Right Place Question, problem main character: The dining hall is almost ready! The last thing we have to do is make sure everything is just so on the tablecloth. Princess Portia’s tablecloth is very decorative and colorful. We are going to put more objects on the tablecloth, but they have to go in the right place. I’ll tell you where to put each object, and you can drag and drop it in the right position. Activity 1: Drag this between the and the Activity 2: Drag this and drop it next to the Activity 3: Drag this and drop it above the Activity 4: Drag this and drop it below the Thank you by main character: Thanks so much. We are ready for Princess Portia to arrive for dinner! You sure know your position words! Positive feedback: Great job! You are good at following directions! Negative feedback: Oh, sorry. That’s not quite right. Try again. Voice over text: Text that is given in “Question, problem, main character” cell. 13
14
Explanation exercise 3 – text in pop up Chip
Generic text OK, see the tablecloth? There are a few shaded areas where we can drop objects, like this and this Image example 1 For the first example, we are going to drop this next to the . Explanation 1 See where it goes on the tablecloth? When we place the object in the correct place, it is between the moon and the cloud. Image example 2 Now let’s place this above the Explanation 2 When we place the box above the heart, it is also below the smiley face. Above, below, next to, and between are all important words that describe a position. OK, let’s see how you do! 14
15
Exercise 4 – design [please add graphics to field below that illustrate the design of the exercise] This last exercise will take place outside the castle and will focus on the sun. 15
16
Drag & drop Template Type of exercise: Drag & drop
Exercise: number & title: Exercise Four: Placing objects in the Correct Position Question, problem main character: Oh boy! I’m glad you’ve stuck with me through Princess Portia’s dinner! Now we’re outside the castle and we’re going to practice placing objects in the right positions around this bright sun! Drag each object to the correct place around the sun. Activity 1: Place this moon (show moon) next to the sun. (Interface should allow the object to go to the left OR the right of the sun.) Activity 2: Place this flower (show flower) below the sun. Activity 3: Place this star (show star) above the sun. Activity 4: Place this bicycle (show bicycle) next to the sun. (Interface should allow the object to go to the left OR the right of the sun.) Activity 5: Place this computer (show computer) below the sun. Thank you by main character: Thank you so much for you’re help. We’ve been busy here at the Castle in the Clouds. It’s been great having you visit! Positive feedback: You got it! You make this look easy! Negative feedback: Oops. Not quite. Try again. Voice over text: Same text listed in Question, problem, main character cell. 16
17
Explanation exercise 4 – text in pop up Chip
Generic text OK, this time, we just have to place objects next to, above, or below the sun! When it tells us to put the object next to the sun, we can put it on either side. Let’s try a couple examples. Image example 1 First, we’ll put this shark (show shark) above the sun. Explanation 1 See where we dragged and dropped the shark? It’s now above the sun. Good work! Image example 2 Now we’ll put this puppy next to the sun. Explanation 2 In this example, we can put the puppy on either side of the sun. Now the puppy is next to the sun. Easy peasy! Now let’s see how you do! 17
