Native Americans Many Native Americans lived in the area that is now Tennessee. They include the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Koasati, Ouapaw, Shawnee, and Yuchi Tribes. Tennessee got its name from the Cherokee words, “Tanasi”, which which was a Cherokee town. Most Native Americans were forced to move from Tennessee because of the “Indian Removals during the 1800’s.
