Machu Picchu Beautiful legacy of the Inca

Machu Picchu or Old Peak is a pre-Columbian Inca site located 8,000 ft above sea level. It is situated on a mountain ridge above the Urubamba Valley in Peru. Often referred to as "The Lost City of the Incas", Machu Picchu is one of the most familiar symbols of the Inca Empire. The Incas started building it around 1430 AD but was abandoned as an official site for the Inca rulers a hundred years later, at the time of the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire. Although known locally, it was said to have been forgotten for centuries when the site was brought to worldwide attention in 1911 by Hiram Bingham, an American historian. Since then, Machu Picchu has become an important tourist attraction. How do you think it was built? Why do you think it is considered one of the 7 “Wonders of the World” today?

Biggest achievement - Roads
Inca roads, like this one to Machu Picchu, extended for a total of 25,000 miles at the height of the empire.

Incan Art The Inca had NO written language so it is important to study their art to understand their culture. Because the Inca religion was based around nature, the sun was perhaps the most important aspect of life because it provided warmth and light. Inti therefore is also known as the Giver of Life. He was worshipped mostly by farmers who relied on the sun to receive good harvests. The Sapa Inca, as ruler of the people, claimed divine heritage and direct descent from the Sun. Why do you think the Inca were called the “Children of the Sun?”
