1 Volcanoes BY: Alexia

2 What is a Volcano? A Volcano is a mountain that opens to a pool of molten rock called lava when pressure builds up it erupts Gasses and rock shoot up through the opening and spill or fill the air with ashes or lava fragments

3 How are Volcanoes Formed ?
Volcanoes are formed when Lava from the earths mantle makes its way to the crust of the earth At the crust it erupts to make Magma flows and ash deposits Every time a volcano erupts it gets larger and larger

4 What are the stages of a volcano ?
Scientist categorized the volcanoes into 3 categories : active, dormant, and extinct A active volcano is a volcano that has recently erupted and may erupted soon A dormant volcano is a volcano that has not erupted in long time but may erupt in the future An extinct volcano erupted thousands of years ago no possibility it could erupt.

5 Why do Volcanoes erupt? The earths crust is made of plates that fit together The plates move sometimes the friction can cause earthquakes and eruptions near the plates They are called plate tectonics

6 What are plate tectonics?
Did you know that Plate tectonics drift place to place to break apart Colliding, and grinding against each other Plates move in different directions and different speeds Sometimes plates crash and sideswipe each other and makes a earthquake

7 How many volcanoes are there ?
Did you know that there are 1,500 volcanoes on earth I know of 80 volcanoes under water Most volcanoes in the U.S are found on Hawaii, Alaska, California, Oregon and Washington

8 The different volcanoes
The Cinder cone volcano is An oval cone made of fragments of lava Composite volcanoes are steep sided with many layers of rock Shield volcano is shaped like a bowl Lava volcano is the volcano when it erupts magma is to thick to flow and magma piles over the vent

9 Damages and supplies to be prepared
Did you know volcanoes can cause damages to houses and people It can also cause landslides ,tsunamis ,flash floods , earthquakes You should make a disaster plan in case of an emergency and have a first aid kit , canned food , can opener ,flashlight , and battery radio

10 The Ring Of Fire Did you know that the Ring Of Fire is located in the pacific ocean The Ring Of Fire has 452 Volcanoes Also home of 50% of dormant volcanoes 90% of the worlds earthquakes and 81% of the largest earthquakes happen here
