1 Video Clip: The Atlantic Slave Trade
Why were enslaved Africans used for labor? Why did Europeans need so many slaves? Who sold the slaves to European merchants? Describe conditions on the slave ship. What happened to the slaves on the Amistad? How many people died on slave ships?

2 African Americans in the Colonial Period

3 I. Slaves in SC The economy of SC was, like other Southern Colonies, based on the plantation system The crops required a lot of work and few were willing to become indentured servants. Southern colonists tried to capture Native Americans. However, they managed to escape because they knew the land. Also, male Native Americans did not know how to farm- this was bad for the economy. So what did the colonists do?

4 I. Slaves in SC Colonists needed people to work the land. Those from Barbados brought slaves with them to SC. Later, more slaves were transported from West Africa to the West Indies, then to the South. Middle Passage: journey from West African to North America. Conditions on the ship were harsh and a lot of slaves died as a result. Manufactured goods taken from Britain to West Africa. Enslaved people from W. Africa were brought to North America. North America would send raw materials to Britain for them to make goods to take to West Africa.

5 II. Growth of SC economy Rice Exportation from SC People from Africa were considered good workers because they knew how to: Raise cattle Cultivate rice They were able to harvest lumber, an important part of trade with Great Britain and Barbados. Large scale importation of slaves began in the 1690s because planters wanted to grow more crops to keep up with demand of rice and indigo.

6 III. New Culture Brought to SC
African slaves brought their culture to SC with them. For example: Language Woodcarving Folk medicine Basket weaving Food (like yams)

7 III. New Culture Brought to SC
Work Songs Call and Response Songs to keep up their spirit. Drums kept the beat and communicated with slaves on other plantations Drums were banned after the Stono Rebellion Gullah/Geechee: language and culture in the Sea Islands on the coast of SC and GA

8 African Words in our Vocabulary
Goober = peanut Chigger = small bug Nana = grandmother Tote = to carry

9 The Jealous Bragging Turtle

10 Bellwork 1. Where did the first colonists in SC come from?
2. Name two parts of African culture that were transported with African slaves.

11 IV. Stono Rebellion 1698: whites are worried about the number of slaves, but they don’t want to limit how many slaves there are. Why would they NOT want to limit slaves? Slaves are their key to making money

12 IV. Stono Rebellion The Rebellion
A slave revolt near Charles Town began when a small group of slaves broke into a store and killed two European settlers. Slaves used their drums to let other slaves know about the rebellion, so they would join them. Their goal was to run away to Florida where they could be free. Many slaves and settlers ended up being killed in the revolt.

13 Iv. Stono Rebellion As a result The Negro Act of 1740 was created.
Prohibited slaves from gathering without supervision, learning to read and write, and to carry weapons. Controlled everything about slave’s, even the way they were allowed to dress. Most important goal: tighter control of slaves

14 V. Free African Americans
SC had very few free African Americans Slaves could (rarely) become free by: Faithful service In their master’s will Owner’s freeing their mistresses or children Slave’s purchasing their own freedom

15 V. Free African Americans
Free Blacks had to leave the state within six months or be re-sold. Why did whites not want free African Americans in SC? Whites were already outnumbered by slaves and they did not want free blacks putting “ideas” into their slaves’ heads. Most freed slaves lived in urban areas

16 Bellwork 1. Who won the Stono Rebellion?
2. What is one way slaves earned their freedom?
