What are the interface issues? How does the interface exacerbate these issues? Why did community leaders want to involve the public in the decision? What was done? What information would be helpful to know about the audiences? What communication techniques were used successfully? Try using the Fact Sheet 4.11: Planning Communication Program to develop an outreach campaign to help resolve this issue.

Have you faced any similar situations in your work? What steps did you take to resolve this issue? Discuss some of the ways your job has changed as a result of increased public involvement in WUI management issues. What are some of the interrelated interface issues in this case study? Give an example of how solutions to any one interface issue could help resolve another.

What were the issues in this case study? Who were the people and organizations involved? How did the fact that this occurred in an interface area (as opposed to a large, contiguous forest) influence the problem? What were the management options? What else could have been done? What role should resource agencies play in controversial natural resource issues such as this one? Could this problem have been prevented or minimized? How?
