University College London Students’ Union (UCLU)
You are automatically a member of UCLU. UCLU is independent from UCL so we can effectively represent you. We also provide you with lots of opportunities for extracurricular activities and support while you are at UCL. Find out more at and visit us at the Welcome Fair 30th Sept, 1st Oct from 10am to 4pm. If you want to get involved further, stand in our upcoming elections: Look out for our weekly s, like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter. Key points: Every UCL student is automatically a member of UCLU so you don’t need to sign up. UCLU is separate from the University and is therefore able to offer independent advice. Elected student officers sit on important UCL committees to look after your best interests. Besides our representative element, we put on a host of events and offer a range of activities for you to get involved with. You can find out more by visiting the website and by checking out the Welcome Fair (where you will pick up lots of freebies and check out what is on offer). If you’re interested in being a student representative yourself visit uclu.org/elections where you can nominate yourself. UCLU runs a few ‘Thinking of Standing’ information sessions that can tell you more about what would be expected of you and there are a few positions that are specifically for first year students! UCLU keeps in touch with you by sending weekly all student s but you can also like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter for more frequent updates.
28
Profits made at UCLU bars, gym, shop and cafes are reinvested into student services.
Over 230 clubs and societies, intramural sport, and one off trips are also available. Key points: UCLU is spread out over 3 main buildings (25 Gordon Street, the Bloomsbury Theatre building and the Lewis’s Building). We have a number of outlets including a gym, 4 cafes, 3 bars and 1 shop. When you make purchases at our outlets the money UCLU makes gets reinvested back into student services. We’re often much cheaper than local competitors! Our outlets also employ student members of staff so if you are looking for part time work visit uclu.org/jobshop. We have over 230 clubs and societies ranging from football and Ultimate Frisbee to Harry Potter and the Vegetarian society. Try fortnight takes place between 29 September - 12 October 2014 where you can participate in ‘taster sessions’ by societies. You are then able to join the clubs and societies you wish from 13 October. If you’re looking for less commitment you can check out intramural sports and Give it a Go events which are one off activities! The UCLU Rights and Advice Centre offers professional legal advice on everything from immigration and housing contracts to UCL procedures and policies such as plagiarism. UCLU also supports campaigns. Sometimes we run our own, for example to extend the opening hours of libraries and sometimes students run campaigns that we support. We’ve helped students campaign to fundraise for natural disasters or register other students to vote. UCLU really is your Union and offers something for everyone. Get in touch if you have any questions or want more information at uclu.org We provide professional, independent advice on everything from housing contracts to UCL procedures. We also support student campaigns.

Volunteering in the community is a big thing here at UCL.
We’re home to the biggest university volunteering department in the UK – the VSU. Last year, over 1900 students took part in projects across London. The VSU has links with over 400 charities and supports 72 different student led projects. Charities UCL students volunteer at include: IntoUniversity - Mentoring school students to help them achieve personally and academically. The Passage – a drop in centre supporting people who are homeless. Keen London – sports and arts activities for children with learning disabilities Foodcycle – using good food that would otherwise go to waste to cook lunch for people in Somerstown. Westminster Befriend A Family – running swimming sessions for children from low income families. Read bullet points. Use own experiences if relevant.
30
VIBE – befriending programme for people with visual impairments
The VSU has loads of one-off volunteering that you can dip into – environmental conservation, fundraising, cultural and sporting events, community festivals …. You can set up your own activities as part of the VSU Student Led projects scheme. The VSU has staff support, training, and grants to help you. For example Hospital Play Teams – run fun activities for children within UCH and Royal Free Hospitals VIBE – befriending programme for people with visual impairments The Big One – UCL students helping school students to put on a big, professional standard musical production. The VSU also offer a two-week team placement scheme (GC Voluntary Sector) as part of the UCL’s Global Citizenship Programme. It’s only open to 2nd and final year students – but remember about it for next year! To find out more about anything the VSU does, visit them at or drop into their offices on the first floor of the Lewis’s Building. Read bullet points. Use own experiences if relevant.
