1 Unit 1 What is Project Management

2 What is a Project? A project is a temporary assignment undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result. The temporary nature of projects indicates a definite beginning and end. The end is reached when the project’s objectives have been achieved or when the project is terminated because its objectives will not or cannot be met, or when the need for the project no longer exists.

3 Who utilizes Projects Although most projects are completed by people working in teams, many projects are completed by individuals. When a person is given a long-term assignment such as a research report or an essay, for example, that person is being assigned a project. Many occupation professionals are assigned projects such as: Engineers, Architecture, Business and Financing and Advanced Manufacturing.

4 What is Project Management?
Project management is the discipline of planning, organizing, and managing resources to bring about the successful completion of a project. By achieving the project goals and objectives. Project management increases product or service quality, improves communication, reduces risks of failure, and increases the chances of project success.

5 The Four Main Functions of Project Management
Scope Time Cost Quality

6 What is Scope (not the mouthwash)?
defines the boundaries (are the constraints) of the project and what is outside those boundaries. The boundaries are typically defined in terms of objectives, deliverables, and resources (e.g., time, personnel, money). The more aspects of scope you can identify, the better off your project will be.

7 Time Time- which involves establishing a timeline for completion of the project, including deadlines, benchmarks, and milestones

8 Cost which is the amount of money that will be required to complete the project successfully. Does the benefit outweigh the cost.

9 Quality Quality, which refers to the ability of a process or product to satisfy both stated and implied needs, with those needs being defined by the stakeholders.

10 Four Facilitating Functions
The four facilitating functions are: human resources communication risk procurement

11 Procurement Procurement is the way that businesses and organizations purchase or obtain goods or services. Procurement may involve specifications development, price negotiation, purchase orders, purchasing, inventory control, and invoices.

12 Human Resources Human resources are the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes of those working on the project.

13 Communication Communication is a two-way process of reaching mutual understanding in which participants not only exchange information, but also create and share meaning.

14 Risk A risk is a threat of a damage, liability, loss, or other negative occurrence that is caused by external or internal vulnerabilities, and that may be minimized or neutralized through preemptive action.

15 Project Management is completed by a Process.
Project Management is focused through a process which is extremely similar to the Design Process used in Engineering. Project management consists of five interrelated process stages: Initiating (Define the Problem) Planning (Generate Concepts Executing (Develop a Solution) Monitoring and controlling (Construct and Test Prototype) Closing (Evaluate and Present the solution)

16 Initiating (Define the problem)
Project Management Initiating PLTW Design Process Define the problem Define a new project. Initiating activities include the definition of initial scope, identification of initial financial resource commitments (criteria and constraints) , identification of stakeholders, selection of the project manager, establishment of a project charter, and getting approval for the project.

17 Planning (Generating Concepts)
Project Management Planning PLTW Design Process Generating Concepts Planning is the activity to generate concepts in order to establish the goal of the project. Planning is where brainstorming is preformed to come up with the best possible solution to the product/project.

18 Executing (Develop a Solution)
Project Management Executing PLTW Design Process Develop a Solution Executing - are the activities performed to carry out and complete the work as defined in the project management plan. Executing activities include coordinating people and resources and performing and integrating the activities as specified in the project plan.

19 Monitoring and Controlling (Construct and Test a prototype)
Project Management Monitoring and Controlling PLTW Design Process (Construct and Test Prototype) Monitoring and controlling, which are the activities performed to track, review, and regulate the execution of the project; identify any areas in which changes to the plan are required; and initiate corresponding changes.

20 Closing (Evaluate and Present Solution)
Project Management Closing PLTW DESIGN PROCESS Evaluate Solution Present Solution Closing, which are the activities performed to finalize the project – to bring it to a conclusion and to meet contractual obligations. Closing activities include obtaining acceptance by the customer or sponsor, conducting post-project or phase-end review, recording impacts, documenting lessons learned, and closing out procurements.
