Government Systems Sainte-Domingue was the name of the island.
Divided island with Spain – French controlled western 1/3 Important colony because of sugar and coffee plantations “Pearl of the Antilles” Four Very Different Social Groups Wealth Planters(white), Free people of Color, Poor Whites, Slaves Wealthy Planters who owned large plantations and a lot of slaves therefore controlled life on the island colony. 90% of the people were slaves and most were African born Government was controlled by King of France
