21 DVD Summary: Four Long Years of War
Congratulations! You have been hired by the Krzyzanowski Production Company to create yet another DVD scene selection index for the production company’s latest masterpiece, a film on the Civil War. Sketch panels from a DVD scene selection index for each subsection and include a caption for each panel that captures the main idea. Underneath, write down the key points from that subsection (this can be a bulleted list). When you’re all done, come up with a catchy but appropriate movie title!

23 DVD Summary Checklist Chapter 10, Section 2 (pages 118-121)
Be sure to read the section, but you don’t need to create a scene for this one. Chapter 10, Section 2 (pages ) The Advantages of the Union and the Confederacy The Anaconda Plan Begins to Squeeze the Confederacy Antietam: The Bloodiest Day of the War The Emancipation Proclamation Changes Union War Aims Turning the Tide: Vicksburg and Gettysburg Total War Forces the South to Surrender

24 Provide a well-supported response on loose-leaf paper:
What was the Emancipation Proclamation, and why did Lincoln sign it into law when he did? What were the short-term and long-term impacts of the Emancipation Proclamation?

25 Stand Up, Pair Up Wander around the room until the music stops.
Compare list with the person closest to you. Person A – 30 seconds Person A = whoever’s birthday is next Person B – 30 seconds Be ready to share.

26 Carousel Reflection: Based on regional differences, was the outcome of the Civil War inevitable?
Why do you think 71% of the population of the U.S. would be concentrated in the North? How could this have impacted the outcome of the Civil War? Why do you think only 28% of the total mile of railroad track in America ran through the South? How could this have impacted the outcome of the Civil War? Why do you think the South risked war with the North knowing that they had very little chance of winning? Would you have heeded President Lincoln’s call for volunteers if you had been a young male living in the North in 1861? Why or why not? What does fighting a “defensive war” mean? Why do you think fewer troops are needed to fight a defensive war rather than one of an offensive nature? Which side, in your opinion, held the upper hand when the war started? North or South? Explain why. Which of the North’s advantages do you think was most important and why?

27 Challenges Facing Government Leaders
While the war raged, leaders in both the Union (North) and the Confederacy (South) faced enormous challenges. On poster paper, list the specific challenges faced by each side. A t-chart would be helpful – the North on one side, and the South on the other. Provide a CSET response defending your answer to the following question: Which side’s leaders dealt with the challenges of war more effectively, North or South? Be ready to share.

28 Acrostic Summary The North wins the Civil War, but was this outcome inevitable? Answer that question in the form of an acrostic poem using the phrase “North Wins”. Your acrostic poem should very clearly state your opinion and should also include ample evidence and support. N – O – R – T – H – W – I – S –
