From: Guidelines for Selecting Microphones for Human Voice Production Research Am J Speech Lang Pathol. 2010;19(4): doi: / (2010/ ) Legend: The influence of noise on the pressure waveform: (a) a clean periodic signal with no noise—that is, with infinite signal-to-noise ratio (SNR); (b–e) the same waveform under the conditions when pink noise is added such that the noise level is (b) 20 dB, (c) 15 dB, (d) 10 dB, or (e) 5 dB weaker than the signal; and (f) when the noise has the same level as the signal. Notice the increased perturbation of the waveform when the noise level is increased. For accurate measurement of voice, the signal is recommended to be at least 15 dB stronger than the internal noise of the microphone and the background noise (cases a–c).
