2 In the active voice, the subject PERFORMS THE ACTION of the verb.

3 Mures placentam portant.

4 (The mice carry the cake.)

5 In the passive voice, the subject is ACTED UPON by the verb.

6 Placenta a muribus portatur.

7 (The cake is carried by the mice.)

8 In Latin, there are special endings to show that the verbs are in the passive voice!

9 First, let’s review the ACTIVE endings of the present tense.

10 Portare--active voice
porto portas portat portamus portatis portant

11 Now we’ll look at the passive voice endings:

portor portaris portatur portamur portamini portantur

13 Second conjugation long “e” verbs

14 tenere--passive voice
teneor teneris tenetur tenemur tenemini tenentur

15 Third Conjugation the short E verbs

16 ducere--passive voice
ducor duceris ducitur ducimur ducimini ducuntur

17 Third Conjugation -io verbs

18 capere--passive voice
capior caperis capitur capimur capimini capiuntur

19 Fourth Conjugation long “i” verbs

20 audire--passive voice
audior audiris auditur audimur audimini audiuntur

21 Now, let’s look at some active and passive verb situations:

22 Puella aquam bibit.

23 Aqua a puella bibitur.

24 Viri carmen cantant.

25 Carmen a viribus cantatur.

26 Panis a viro venditur

27 Vir panem vendit.
