Gender Selection Lauren Kubeja
2
Thesis Parents should not be able to choose the gender of their baby because it’s expensive and is proven to not always work, it’s against nature, and it can cause an imbalance in sexes, adding to sexism.

Arguments expensive and doesn't always work: For each couple that gets this done cost about 18 to 20 thousand dollars; and there are about 4,000 to 6,000 couples that get this done each year. Against nature: Involved in all of the methods for gender selection, the baby is made in a Petri-dish. Then the embryo of the right gender is placed in the uterus. Parents would rather their child be made in a lab then the normal way, just so they could get the gender they want. Imbalanced: Today in China there are about 32 million more men than women, and it has caused a big sex discrimination.

Counterarguments Expensive and doesn't work: the supporters say that it’s worth the money and the risk; so if someone were to already have like 4 boys and want a girl, they could get the gender selection done instead of keep trying and end up having another boy. Against nature: The supporters say it’s up to the parents if they want to do gender selection. That it’s the parents right if they want to spend the money to get gender selection done. Imbalance: Supporters say that the whole imbalance thing is blown way out of proportion. They believe that there is no evidence of an imbalance ever happening. The supporters also think that the government should not be involved and that it is the parent’s right and choice if they want to spend the money for gender selection

Conclusion The methods are all close to a 50/50 chance of working. It’s unnatural because the baby is born in a science lab, and the embryos are killed or studied. There is an imbalance in China, with 32 million more men than women. The imbalance has caused men in China to kidnap women just so they could have a wife. The males also think their more dominate because they have the women outnumbered. Keep these points in mind if you are thinking about using gender selection. Ask yourself, is it worth it? Or could this really happen? Think about how your money could go to the children who don’t have food, the ones who don’t have anything.
