1 Chapter 1: Cells

2 1.1 Cells are the basic unit of living things.
Learning Target: Explain difference between living and nonliving things; Describe how microscope lead to the discovery of cells

3 Think.Pair.Share. Brainstorm a list of living and nonliving things.

4 Think.Pair.Share. Brainstorm a list of living and nonliving things.

5 What is the difference between a living and nonliving thing?
Living things use energy. Living things need food/water. Most living things move. Living things can grow. Living things can reproduce.

6 A living thing is also called an organism.
What is an organism? A living thing is also called an organism. Any form of life that can grow and reproduce is called an organism.

7 All organisms are made of cells!
Cell = most basic unit of life Unicellular = organism made of 1 cell Multicellular = organism made of many cells “uni” mean single or one “multi” means multiple

8 Characteristics of Living Things
There are 5 characteristics that all organisms share: Organization Use energy Grown and develop Respond/move Reproduce

9 Characteristics of Living Things
ORGANIZATION All organisms are made of cells, smallest unit of life. Levels of cellular organization: Cells Tissues Organs Organ system Organism

10

11 Characteristics of Living Things
All organisms grown and develop from birth into an adult. Organisms respond to changes in the world around them. All organisms can reproduce, and create offspring similar to themselves

12 Grow and Develop

13 Respond to changes in environment

14 Reproduce

15 What organisms need to survive?
Organisms cannot grow or reproduce without necessities: Energy from food and sun Materials – oxygen, carbon dioxide, water Living space/shelter

16

17 Cells are too small to see without a microscope.
Who discovered cells? Cells are too small to see without a microscope. Hooke observed tree bark under microscope; first called the “small boxes” “cells” Leeuwenhoek observed pond water and saw “animulcules” in the water, the first unicellular organisms

18

19

20 Cell Theory Scientific theory = accepted explanation that is supported through evidence

21 Cell Theory

22 Cell Theory Every living thing is made of one or more cells
Cells carry out functions needed to support life Cells come only from other living cells

23 Who helped prove the cell theory?
Louis Pasteur Observed that milk turned sour because of unicellular organisms known as bacteria Developed process, pasteurization, which uses heat to kill bacteria First called bacteria found in human blood “germs” because it caused sickness

24 Who helped prove the cell theory?
Louis Pasteur Scientists believed that bacteria grew from nonliving things = spontaneous generation Conducted an experiment to disprove spontaneous generation. Proved that cells come from other living cells
