Energy Flow in the Ecosystem
7
What is the main energy source on Earth?
SUNLIGHT
8
Autotrophs aka Producers
Organisms that can capture the sun’s energy or chemical energy to create their own food. Photosynthesis: Use of light energy to create carbohydrates. Chemosynthesis: Use of chemical energy to produce carbohydrates. Can be done in the absence of light.
10
Heterotroph aka Consumer
Organisms that rely on other organisms for their energy and food supply.
11
Herbivore Eats only plants
12
Carnivore Eat only meat Snakes, owls, etc
13
Omnivore Eat both plants and animals
14
Detritivores Eat dead and decaying plant and animal material
15
Decomposers Organisms that break down organic matter
Ex. Fungi, bacteria, some worms
16
Energy Flow Energy flows ONE direction From autotroph to heterotroph
17
Food Chain A series of steps in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten.
18
Food Web A network of complex feeding relationships in an ecosystem
20
Trophic Level Each step in the food chain
Each level depends on the trophic level before it for energy Algae Zooplankton Small Fish Squid Shark Producer Primary Consumer Secondary Consumer Tertiary Consumer
21
Create a Food Web Use the organism cards to create a food web.
You must include AT LEAST 14 of the cards. All of the cards with stars must be used. Once cards are organized, draw it with your bell questions. You may write the name, but it should be neat and organized. You should include arrows facing the correct direction. Label each trophic level. You can color code them (you would need a key), or just label each. Label type of consumer.
