Integers By Kathy Winter 6th grade Math

2 9.1 Understanding Integers
Vocabulary Positive Numbers - ______________________________________________________________________________ Negative Numbers - ______________________________________________________________________________ Integers - ______________________________________________________________________________ Number Line - _______________________________________

3 Positive Numbers Most numbers you have seen so far have been greater than or equal to 0. Numbers greater than 0 are called positive numbers. They are represented by a + to show they are positive.

4 Negative Numbers Numbers less than 0 are negative numbers.
Negative numbers are always shown with a minus (-) sign. You will also see them with parentheses to keep the negative sign with the correct number. Example 4 + (-3)

5 Number Lines On a number line, the further right the number is, the greater it is. Example 5 and 8: The 8 is further to the right so, it’s greater than 5 On a number line, the further left it is, the less it is. Example -11 and -9 The -11 is further to the left so it is less than -9.

6 Zero is the Starting Point
Zero is not negative or positive. Positive numbers are always greater than negative numbers. Example 7 and -3 Negative numbers are always less than positive numbers. Example and 44

7 Write each number as an integer:
Ethanol freezes at 114° C below zero Matt is 59 inches tall. Kathy lost 4 pounds. Dave has a debt of $24. Julia hopped 5 ft. backwards.

8 Compare these integers.
-7 _____ -10 Hint: Which integer is closer to zero? It is greater than the other integer. -6 _____ 13 -3 ______ 3 6 ______ -6 -55 ______ -32

9 Opposites The opposite of any negative number is its positive number.
You get to zero when you add them together. Example: The opposite of -76 is 76 The opposite of 13 is -13
