IAXO low background Detector Platform: a proposal to detector groups Igor G. Irastorza (U. Zaragoza) 7th General IAXO Meeting, DESY, 3-4 July 2017

Low background detectors for IAXO
Low background requirements to IAXO detectors are quite strong. Some detector technologies very promising but still modest “low background” efforts so far. We need to promote low-background know-how among detector groups + assess realistic low-background prospects of all technologies considered. Lot of test work expected in different detector groups. Can we organize better and find synnergies by creating a common test platform? 7th IAXO CM, DESY, July 2017 Igor G. Irastorza / Universidad de Zaragoza

A common detector test bench?
Some (not all) low background techniques could be common to all detector instances. The platform should provide passive and active (muon vetoes) shielding simulating the geometry of a IAXO focal point detector. Opening simulating connection to optics + magnet Active shielding (muon vetoes) passive shielding Detector 7th IAXO CM, DESY, July 2017 Igor G. Irastorza / Universidad de Zaragoza

IAXO detector platform
The platform should accommodate any of the detector candidates (work in coordination with the relevant group) Work in common should promote access to low background know-how, common simulation software, radiopurity screening capabilities… The platform could be located underground (Canfranc lab). Advantages: external background radiation very well known (background model), access to existing radiopurity facilities, politically good to link LSC to IAXO in Spain,… But: IAXO is not underground, so test on surface also needed (2 platforms, funding permitting…?) 7th IAXO CM, DESY, July 2017 Igor G. Many elements already in place...
IAXO-D0 efforts at UNIZAR could be the seed of the platform… (see Elisa’s talk) Plans at other institutions: Saclay (another test bench for Micromegas in the ANR request), Heidelberg (MMC tests), Bonn (Ingrid tests), Mainz (muon vetoes), and more. Experience at CAST: collaboration between Micromegas and Ingrid groups. (IAXO pathfinder system: plans to resume operation in CAST under discussion) All these efforts could be framed in the IAXO detector platform action. 7th IAXO CM, DESY, July 2017 Igor G. Irastorza / Universidad de Zaragoza
