3 The Magna Carta 1st document to limit the power of the English King.
Guaranteed the right of trial by jury. Allowed Due Process of Law: protection from arbitrary taking of life, liberty, or property. Granted the right to property. Laid the foundations of Parliament.

4 English Bill of Rights Signed by William & Mary following the Glorious Revolution. Created a limited monarchy in which Parliament had power over the king. It reaffirmed the Magna Carta. Granted the right of habeas corpus & abolished cruel and unusual punishment. Expanded rights to commoners

5 Declaration of Independence
Contains four main parts. The Preamble stating why the Declaration was written. The Declaration of Rights lists the rights to which all people are entitled. The List of Grievances details the colonists’ list of complaints. The Resolution asserted the colonies independence from England.

6 U.S. Constitution Forms a Federal Republic
Based on Checks & Balances with Separation of Powers Contains the Preamble and 7 Articles that define the government. Layout of the Federal Government is contained in the first 3 Articles. The last articles deal with the States, Ratification, etc.

7 U.S. Bill of Rights 1st: Guarantees Freedoms of Speech, Religion, Press, Assembly, & Petition. 2nd: Right to Bear Arms 3rd: Prohibits the quartering of soldiers in private homes during peace times. 4th: Protection from unreasonable searches & seizures. 5th: Guarantees the “Due process of Law”

8 6th: The right to a speedy & public trial by jury in criminal cases.
7th: The right to a trial by jury in civil cases of over $20. 8th: Prohibits excessive bail or cruel and unusual punishments. 9th: A person’s rights are not limited to those listed in the amendments. 10th: Powers not given to the national government by the Constitution belong to the states & the people.
